Letter to Bishop Parker describing state of Chatteris property which he visited "on my way home". Generally poor condition with much damp in the walls. Mr Dodds , Clerk of the Council and Secretary of the Friends Meeting Society (who are selling the chapel - valued at £250) showed him around and admitted no repairs done for 17 years. Builder in contention to buy would probably out bid the church. Canon Malone & Canon Hunting agree that they should not proceed further. So has stopped a bid and put Withams on standby. Fr Collins could not contact Fr Gaffney by telephone.
Collins, Gerard A RevIncludes [not present] documentation required for Fr Trafford - grateful if he will undertake to hear the Lowestoft nuns confessions.
The management of the Banham Trust is quite constrained and has worked until now - sets out major aspects of the trust. The Bishop recommends that it stays as it is. However he'd be interested to hear anything Mr Coney or the Abbot can come up with.
Wishes him well in his new activity in Liverpool.
Canon Gerard Collins writes: Lease with Mr Stebbings. Need clarity from Fr Mossey over the intention of the tenant to pay extra rent for a renewal? Bishop concerned that offering an additional seven years at £50 per year may not be best value for money in the long term. Furthermore better not to commit when the future of Halesworth is not clear. But if Stebbings threatens to clear out then, provided the Chapter agreed, the Bishop would accept the seven years.
Typed annotation: Addressed to John [Fr Mossey] from Bill [Canon Hunting] Sending the letter onwards (please return) to save writing. Questions lease value and term - £1 p.w for a shop is not a lot.

Delayed responding to the Bishop until could send financial and other returns. Canon Hunting had his appeal a week after Bishop's letter of 29 August was received. £3,500 is on deposit with National Provincial Bank but willing to move it to wherever the Bishop suggests. Caister site might do better than erecting a temporary hut - currently suitable for nearby holiday camp but farther from Caister than the present St Michael's Cemetery chapel. Surprised Mass has not been said at the three chapels on Holydays. Acle right of way letter and file to be sent to the Bishop. Fr Dennis raised the matter when the church forecourt was being churned up by traffic. Fr Dennis left lots of notes. Mentions a "rigmarolish letter" about Caister Chapel which has not been used for many years (within memory of Fr Evans and others) as it is the custom for the body to be brought to the church the previous night for Requiem Mass the next day and interment in the cemetery concerned. The statue (of St Aloysius? but told this was a matter of long time debate) is weathered but no more than might be expected in this area.
Fr Keane CP - greatly desires a convent chaplaincy; a very negative person; an hypochondriac
Fr Donnelly - doing good work; poor company; a little boorish; but sound.
Fr Evans - getting old and less energetic; talking of leaving after Whitsun; has angina.
The nuns say May is the best time for Confirmations; from June onwards most of the parents are busy with holiday guests.
Disagrees with the Bishop. Considers the trust funds could be better managed and not allowed to deteriorate in returns - draws a comparison with Downside's better fund management. Quotes Canon Hunting that too much effort is required to maintain too little income.
Innes, M Benet Rev OSBThanks for appointment to Gorleston - hard to leave Southwold. Financial position regarding the debt at Halesworth. No outstanding debt on the church; need to repay the £1580 loan received from parishioners. Canon Hunting and he have made arrangements for money to be paid [regarding general interest] amounting to £300 per year without troubling Fr Rudd. £60-£70 in the bank with an average collection of £9 between now and Christmas.
McBride, Edward Rev (1919-2011)Copies of parishes agreement re money for the school received. Ministry of Education loan application was agreed at the Governors' meeting; it will be handled by Canon Hunting.
McBride, Edward Rev (1919-2011)Describes the arrangements for repaying the loans to the parishioners - slight changes in totals as some had been made as gifts. Fr Rudd aware and content.
McBride, Edward Rev (1919-2011)Has discussed the situation with Mr Stebbings - summarises the discussion regarding rent, lease durations and payments. He may not renew of his demands are not met.
Mossey, John J Rev Hon. CF (-1995)Sending 2 Faculties for Fr Yates' converts and the Syllabus for Diocesan RI . Better to place funds collected for the New Church Building Fund with the Diocese instead of banks for a better interest (3% per annum). Send to Fr Hunting, the Diocesan Treasurer. Bishop will send a clear statement of moneys received by the Diocesan Treasurer from Fr Clare's time to show no money has gone astray.
Burditt, Noel Rev (-2000)Bishop has thanked Ely Council Education Committee regarding Religious Instruction for RC children. Fr Lydiate must ensure children attend and get back to school on time to avoid complaints. An altar stone secured for the Italian Camp - 30 shillings credited to account by Fr Hunting (manuscript annotation) - Bishop regards it as his when use finished. Plans for a potential church sent, Bishop wants Fr Lydiate to study them. Similar church in North Walsham built just before the war and Fr Lydiate encouraged to go and see it. Councillor Mallet is written to about jewellery. Return of chalice - check it is satisfactory and if it has been fire-gilt. Fr Mortimer Flanagan will be claiming back his furniture from March when he starts at Swaffham. Bishop hopes Fr Lydiate will be able to make suitable arrangements for his own furniture.
Burditt, Noel Rev (-2000)Neighbour (a parishioner) is selling a house, building a bungalow in the garden. The buyer wants a garage at the rear as access to common is not permitted. Offer is to sell the land where our current garage is to the parishioner; he will build us a new garage. Map of site attached.
Manuscript annotation: "I write to Witham. Write Rudd, also Bill [Canon Hunting] for proposed new road now dropped, OK. What sort of garage & fence, Pay Job fees."
Includes a letter from Mr Sauvain and comments that they are waiting for Canon Hunting on the matter of insurance.

Mr DET Argent had contacted Canon Hunting in September 1961 about purchasing The Top House in Aldeburgh. He was told that whilst Mrs Simpson is alive the chapter would not consider selling the house. However, he has heard that Mrs Simpson has died and would like the opportunity to buy it.
