Writing as Chairman of the Executive Committee, having read the report form Tony Snelling of Dunlop Heywood. The Shrine should operate within its means and not get into a position of indebtedness to the Diocese in the foreseeable future. This proposal would cost at least £300,000m, which would have to be borrowed and paid for. He recalls saying that funds should be built up for maintenance and hopes his position is clear and that he carries the Administrator and the Shrine Executive with him.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)TH Blyth & Sons tender of £149,187 for the extension is acceptable
Allen, Peter Rev SM BA MThAsks for clarification on the points:
- extension of overdraft with Lloyds Bank - monies from sale put into that account?
- How to finance the work on Aelred House and building of garages is the answer to 1 is "no"?
- need £30,000 for Shrine during November to March - again if "no" to 1, how is it to be financed?
- Can Canon Kieran bequest look after the debt of £50,000 to the Diocese?
Need to sort things out to stay in a good relationship with Lloyds Bank (especially the new manager).
Schedule of Defects is accurate as are the Architect's Notes on the defects.
However, the water penetration report is unacceptable. There is no blockage in the guttering - none of the retention money will be released until satisfactorily corrected. The revision to the design was to eliminate leaks and this has been unsuccessful. Direct the contractor to make good.
(Copied to all members of the Shrine Council executive Committee)
Ad Clerum had underlined need to obtain permission for spending money. Mgr MacBride was vague about the guidelines. Fr Chapman identifies that a lot of maintenance is required: repainting church, presbytery and cottage; rewiring the cottage; addressing damp in the cottage; Hall needs work to meet Fire Service standards; an elm tree needs removing.
Personal note: keeping fairly well, but, off colour at times and things, at times, get on top of him. Not had a proper holiday - so perhaps it is his own fault.
"Taylor" of Southwold who built the Church and Presbytery in 1914 observed that the belfry was infested by woodworm. It was treated and planks replaced by a local man for £16. Upon inspecting the Housekeeper's bedroom (she had nearly fallen through the floor) and the rest of the house he suggests that the whole place (church and house) was infested by woodworm and needed treating. He could do that for £430. Dean Canon McBride suggested that Fr Pritchard contact the Bishop to get approval to spend the money.
Pritchard, Guy Rev PhD MA (-1983)Borough surveyors says there is no right of way to the home. Its use seems to be a concession on our part. Perhaps can offer the lady this approach?
Halesworth Church has woodworm on the outside and needs £500 to £550 amount of work. Permission to proceed?
manuscript note: "Told Jim 2/4/74 to get on with the fence"
Windows overlooking church property: no objections provided they are frosted glass and do not open except at the top.
Right of Way: Unsure about the right of way being requested - there is a private foot path to the old people's home. Awaiting confirmation from East Suffolk County Council.

They will be offered to Sheffield Walsingham Association, hoping they may be given to a Catholic school - decision had been made to revert to the original theme of a "Norfolk Barn" type of building.
Strict control would not be taken over the installation of any object for the Chapel.
