Growth in number of Pilgrims
Sound System £2,800 - loop
Wals Trust (Stan & Michael)"
1980: Confirmation that the Appeal Committee has been established for the Shrine Council on 24 July 1980
1982: Completed work? Bishop thanks Appeal Committee for raising £465,000.
Suggesting that an individual should go to Oscott or Innsbruck for "deepening". manuscript annotation by Bishop Grant - "I think Oscott - as a convert he still has a lot to learn about the Church in England"). Long explanation about why Bishop Clark circumvented his own processes to spend money on a strip of land which joins up Elmham House to the boundary of the Church and which came up a short notice. He and Fr Connelly paid for it out of income.
All this makes it more desirable to establish a management committee at Walsingham:
himself; Roland [Connelly]; Michael Ward (Solicitor, King's Lynn); Col. Cary-Elwes (Thurton); Philip Browning (Poringland); Mr Jameson (N. Elmham).
Turnover at Walsingham is too large for one man. Expenditure must include an annual repayment to the Diocese to offset the debt.
This badly needs attention,. Gerry [Moorcraft] would laugh cynically! A visit to Walsingham is indicated - Michael Ward (solicitor) assures him that all is in order. Roland is an admirable Pilgrimage Director but hopeless with staff. Campbell Steward speaks accurately. Maybe John Drury could be introduced to this difficult area.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop Charles and Bishop Derek have offered support for "THE PROJECT". Cardinal Basil thinks there will be no difficulty in raising £150,000. Appeal being run by Fr Birch; financial responsibility to be the Diocese'. Helpful for Fr John Drury to help Fr Wilson? There is no treasurer worthy of the name. Charitable trust set up by Michael Ward. Bishop leaving it to Fr Wilson to address the how, when and what.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Discussing tenders from Fisher's and from Rogers. Clive [Fr Birch] running into the red - overdrafts were normal for Roland [Fr Connelly] although not so high; Fr Wilson to advise. John Hawkes' plan welcomed. Point about letting a church hall out to Later Day Saints on a regular basis.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Too much being hidden within the figures - not disclosing the real situation. Like to arrange a meeting with Ward and Connelly
Ward, Michael R W (1930-1995)Abortive work costs have to be paid.
Appeal should have a personalised approach by the Bishop - not done - but water under the bridge. The Cathedral is renewing its boilers, etc therefore less of a donation from that parish. Refers to his Ad Clerum in which he states that whilst a generous benefaction underwrites a third of the costs, any approach by Mr Ward should be welcomed.
The pope's visit - go sensitively, unlikely that he will visit Walsingham, so the success of the Appeal should not rest on this alone.
Encourage Fr Birch to take over more. Use original architects (Miller & Tritton). Accepts suggestion of transfer of Hulme properties to Walsingham Trust.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)£1000 Cheque for Walsingham Trust signed by Bishop Clark and is being sent to Michael Ward for signature. Account for £3000 received from Fishers?
manuscript note: "Start a new account please Joan - Walsingham Shrine - Emergency Fire Work"
Planning Officer suggesting that the Advisory Committee, which suggests the surrendering of the lease, and Fr Shryane and Mr Ward shpould meet to discuss the resourcing of such a move - the Council does not have the resources for it. On this would depend the Council's decision on whether to accept the lease.
Borough of King's LynnBorough Secretary writes to inform Michae Ward that the committee has agreed to accept the surrender of the lease, and, this has been accepted by the Borough Council. Formal exchange can be done via correspondence.
Borough of King's Lynn1st December for the final handover of lease and keys. Regarding any future use of the Chapel for religious purposes, that is still being considered for future plans.
Borough of King's LynnTown Clerk writing to confirm lease. Adjustment to Committee of adminstration: add Alderman JAJ Claxton, Hon. Mrs Dawnay, the Borugh Surveyor and one other to be nominated by the Borough Committee.
Cleaning works may commence - keys from Mr Haigh in the Surveypr's department. Repairs for the chapel not in current budget, but minor works may be done if funds available from any underspend.
annotation: "Asked +Grant for Michael Ward as solicitor 5/5/68"
Purpose to establish Appeal Fund for Slipper Chapel Development. Cardinal agreed to be patron, ditto Duke of Norfolk. Appeal to be in Cardinal's name.
List of actions
In accordance with the Instrument of Management (#1000) Bishop Grant appoints 4 individuals to be Foundation Managers for St Martha's for a period of 3 years: Fr Hammons, Mrs Catton, Mr Thomas, Mr Ward.
Grant, Charles Alexander Rev LCL BA (1906-1989)Renewal of 3 year term as School managers: Fr Hammond, Mrs Devane, Mr Thomas, Mr Ward
Grant, Charles Alexander Rev LCL BA (1906-1989)Having received a call from Fr Pat Brown in response to his letter to the Cardinal regarding the September pilgrimage. The Cardinal is not happy with calling it the "Cardinal's Pilgrimage" he thinks it should be more Marian related. Fr Allen puts forward suggestions and asks can we use the Dowry of Mary tradition - "The Dowry Pilgrimage"?
Serious thought required before the decision is taken on the role of the Walsingham Trust (Trustees being Michael Ward, the Bishop and Fr Allen). Separation of finances from the Diocese (which Matt Duffin did not like) needs to be clearer since some leave money, etc. to the Shrine but NOT to the Diocese. In essence it matters little since the Bishop of East Anglia is in charge, but to consider the Shrine as a Parish?
Resigning as Trustee of the Walsingham Trust, as part of handing over. Michael Ward is making arrangements for Fr Peter Allen to take over.
Birch, Clive Rev SM LGSMBirch is asking the Bishop to invite six people to be members of the new Executive Committee - plus the Bishop and Mr Pyne?
