Part of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Parish, Wymondham

Provision of Church & presbytery in Wymondham a very great work and quite necessary. But need thorough consideration. The Vicar-General has experience in purchasing sites; need to consider current and future needs. Is Norwich growing towards Wymondham or vice versa?

Fr Phillips is informing the Bishop of two properties he would like to buy. There are plots of land available outside the town but these two are in the centre and offer the best possible site for Church and Presbytery. Whilst he is not certain that he could obtain either he asks for permission to try. He offers options and has identified another house which could serve as a presbytery opposite to the site he is interested in. He has spoke at length with the Vicar-General today.
Pages 3 & 4 are a location plan and property particulars respectively.
[Property A, on Middleton St., is half of Caius House, a well built gentleman's residence converted to a dwelling and two shops. Property B, at junction of Church St. and Market St., is a pre-reformation Guild Chapel in good state but no roof. ]

Refers to a discussion with Mgr Freeland about a notice in the Catholic papers regarding Wymondham [no subject given]. Would Bishop consider an application from a prises about to leave a religious order? This priest can get testimonials from his order and the Vicar General of his Diocese, he also has some years experience as a PP.
Manuscript annotation: "Send times of Mass, etc. at Wymondham. I'll send the papers. [rest illegible]... Aug 6 / 26"

Arrived at Norwich. Mgr Freeland suggests he start at Wymondham on Sunday - will live at Norwich until settled. He will devote all of his £100 a year income to the Mission and his living. No idea what is necessary but will rely on the Bishop for any deficit. Mgr Freeland has suggested I need a motorcycle for the big area - it will cost £50.

Encloses a completed form (addressed to "Sec of C W") for Bishop to sign. Since the Bishop is in Norwich next week, perhaps he could visit Wymondham?
Manuscript annotation: "Sent on application duly signed. Nov 18 / 26. Can come to your Friday aft. Nov 26. Have written thereof to Freeland so fix up a time for me to come with him."

Acknowledges letter of 29 October. Will establish an Altar Society. Dr Gaynor's offer of £25 will be accepted. Mgr Freeland will pay rent for the Chapel. New address: 1 Elm Terrace (opp. Police station). Use "Catholic Church" as it is simpler. Landlady, Mrs Dickerson, of Griffen Hotel in Attleborough has a suitable room for Mass. Please forward vestments, etc. to her. Propose to start on 7th November.
Armistice Service - vicar has asked him to take part in a combined service - would it be wise for me to take part?

Requesting permission for Dr Arendzen CMS to give a week's lectures in Low Week. Mgr Freeland was not too keen, but Fr Phillips thinks it will help. Put an appeal for a Tabernacle into the Universe.
Manuscript annotation: "'Drop of honey attracts more flies than a pail of vinegar'. I prefer a non-controversial mission. Perhaps Dr Arendzen should do this, he is very clever. Controversy [?] means Counter-attack by Prots who have the Food & blanket charities, and for which go under. Probably this is what the Vicar means, the wounds that rumble afterwards, and no positive good done. March 4 / 27.' "

Writing from St Mary's Abbey, Buckfast, Fr Phillips believes that he can raise £100 a year for some years and if £175 is sufficient for the Mission and him, then he could start in a fortnight if convenient to Mgr Freeland. His next address is "Eastlands", Basingstoke.
Manuscript annotation: "I hope I have not asked too much. I don't want you to ruin [illegible], but to help out your income. Perhaps I did not quite understand your financial position. Have written to Mgr Freeland. You can write to him telling exact day of your intended arrival at Norwich. He will examine your faculties and administer the Oath unto Mgr Freeland. Sending faculties and [?] form. July 12 / 26.

Steel Tabernacle for the church. Present is made of wood and Mgr Freeland says it is not safe. Suitable for the new Church (when it is built). Cost is about £20. Can Bishop help or should he advertise in the Universe?
