6 paragraphs being notes on a meeting held between Fr Brewer and Fr Trafford:

  1. Agreement on Fr Trafford's view - school managers need to take a new line for the school; taking into account Diocesan policy and needs for a future secondary and grammar school
  2. Number to not exceed 110 - can be maintained by the admission of non-catholic pupils. This will justify 4 teachers
  3. Managers exercise admission of pupils through the Parish Priest.
  4. No need for grading of the school
  5. LEA to take initiative regarding alterations to buildings
  6. Canon Brewer to take up points 4 & 5 with LEA as necessary.

Long talk with Fr Trafford about affairs at Beccles school. Doubtful that the Ministry will allow work to proceed as the national economy cannot yet afford it and other priorities exist. Fr Trafford is already approaching the LEA about a teacher appointment.

Local Authority should be urged to agree, prioritise and address the permanent alterations to the school. Chasing up "Aided status" notification, "Instrument of Management" and "Rules of Management. These need to be vetted by the [diocesan] legal department. Asking this because West Suffolk have produced, sealed and completed documents without reference to us, hence requiring steps to correct.

Advising the Abbot that the Bishop is unable to attend to Diocesan affairs for the next few weeks, hence this letter as reply.
Bishop has been quite clear, i accordance with other Bishops, on the approach to be taken. Firm approval from him for the scheme at Beccles. Covers a range of funding/income issues associated with Beccles parish. Note that Gorleston Catholic Modern Secondary school will have Beccles as a feeder school.
typescript annotation: "Fr Abbot's letter gave the agreed valuation as follows:- Playing field £1260, House and Garden £4,100. All this will be sold to the Authority for £5360. The playground will be retained in the ownership of the Authority. The remainder will be conveyed back to Downside Abbey Beccles School trust. 'It looks as though out of this Beccles will be "clear" about £3000'".

"Rules of Management..." have been agreed with LEA and Ministry after negotiations of over two years. Paragraph 11advice given. Asks for advice.
Headmaster of Sir John Leman School has no legal right to make the request for a parental letter, but one cannot reasonably object. There is no form letter for this.

Encloses a copy of a letter from Local Education Authority in Ipswich. Needs to consult Canon Rudderham on the proposal to remove senior children (25 off) and send them to the County Modern School. Meeting of parents to sign a Protest and point out the Plan has not been approved by the Minister and then allow 6 months for formal acceptance by the school. Considers this is a ploy by the Headmaster at Beccles Modern School to fill his school. Beccles is the only Catholic school in the area and need to keep it.

Encloses two letters and describes a situation relating to Beccles RC School for which he invites guidance.
Fr Brookes, before he left, had submitted a scheme to the Ministry of Education for the building of two classrooms (wooden, prefabricated) classrooms to relieve overcrowding. Suffolk Education committee ask why the children could not go to Beccles or Bungay County Modern instead.
