Disposition of deed, etc. is a matter for Fr Delaney and Canon Tonks to sort out. Fiance is nothing to do with Mr Yorke. Fr Delaney bought the 4 plots and the presbytery in his own name. They were conveyed to the Bishop and others; however, the plots were no longer needed once a new site was found. The same process has happened for this site - acquired by Fr Delaney, subsequently to be conveyed to the Bishop and others. Fr Delaney has deposited the deeds with the bank and paid a deposit because he was concerned not to lose the site. Sort it out between you and send on the deeds for the plots to settle with Mr Reade - it being a small matter but it is hindering things.
Bertram R YorkeReceived the conveyance document. Enclosed deed relates to Fr Delaney selling surplus plots to Mr Reade . They are not needed as a new plot has been bought for the Church. Arrange for the document to be signed by the Bishop and returned.
Bertram R YorkeHow do things stand with reference to deeds in Aldeburgh? Has one to sell four plots to Mr W C Reade. The other for the church site is held in a bank without being signed by any of the trustees (Bishop, Peacock, Parker, Delaney). This should have been done before the transaction went to the Bank. How are we to know what has been purchased if we do not see the documents? We have no title to the property?
Tonks, Joseph Rev (1863-1943)Fr Davidson provides a detailed explanation of what he asked Reade to do and what was done. Reade is of the opinion that he is owed commission which is less than that which a Woodcocks Estate Agent would have charged.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BA£400 due at end of month. Has asked Mr Reade to send bill to Canon Tonks. Arrangements for payment may involve a post-dated cheque as Fr Davidson wishes to see this small builder paid early. [Bishop manuscript annotation: "Do with this (Canon Tonks) as you see fit, i.e. send cheque at once or wait till Davidson's return"]. Fr Davidson will try to raise more money in Spain with help of the Spanish lady here. Lost the Bishop's questions regarding Religious Instruction - but says there are 14[13?] in Aldeburgh and 12 in Leiston who attend Catechism; he does extra help for individual cases. [Bishop manuscript annotation: [?] another copy [?][?]full up!]. Parnell trouble: with the Bishop's support Fr Davidson will have the strength to deal with her (described as a bully and ultimately a coward) and be friendly but not discuss parish business. A Real hope for the Church by December.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BA£400 due at end of month; has asked Mr Reade to send bill to Canon Tonks. Did the Canon like Bedford?
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAHe will send on Dr Somers' receipt. He did not employ Mr Reade; he acted for the buyer.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAEncloses his reply / explanation about Reade and commission. Reade will drop claim is a lot of trouble is caused by it.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BADeeds being sent on; trustees as suggested by the Bishop; one conveyancing used for both sites. Plans and estimates to be forwarded. Smyth of Leiston is a cabinet maker and house furnisher who has started a little building; Reade is a good builder. Comparison of each bidders proposals.
Delaney, Vincent Rev£800 for demolishing the tower and roofing over. Builders also consider saving the tower can be done for less. An estimate is awaited. Mr Hastings' view is that the best job needs to be done to avoid having to re-address the problem in 30 years time. Aldeburgh Major [W C Reade] (also head of the building firm) considers the tower should be saved - it is a local landmark. Would the bishop sanction an appeal to Aldeburgh people? Differing views on best approach in light of cost estimates for the options.
Jolly, William T Rev (-1982)Canon Peacock informs them that the Bishop is in the area - he can be asked to sign the Conveyance to Mr Smith. The deed will be forwarded to Fr Parker. Any charges on the land? The vacant land is assumed not to have rates or taxes and Mr Smith will provide the balance of the purchase money. Supporting statement received from Mr Reade for his commission: "I beg to say that I was asked to find a customer for the land and having done so am entitled to usual commission for the same. As nothing had been said about commission I thought it best to mention the matter before deducting the amount but I did not suppose for one moment but that your client would be willing to pay it." Jackaman say that if this is the case then the commission seems fair and reasonable.
Jackaman & SonsForward the £7 cheque which was retained pending instructions regarding Mr Reade's claim for commission on the sale.
Jackaman & SonsReceived the signed contract. Mr Reade is enquiring about his 2.5% commission being deducted from the deposit. Was this agreed?
Jackaman & SonsLetter from Tonks that Reade is not entitled to money; a letter from Reade (enclosed) claiming that he was instructed by Fr Davidson. Suggest Tonks may like to communicate with Fr Davidson. Provide summary of income and charges relating to sale of land.
Jackaman & SonsFollowing a letter from Wearing & Hastings, an Advisory Engineer, Mr G E East, will visit the church in Aldeburgh on 31 July. He would like to meet Fr Bull and a representative of the builders. The way the system is being operated is in a manner diametrically opposed to their instructions.
Panelec (Great Britain) LtdSomeone has installed a time switch without reference to us. System is designed for intermittent use, as per their letter of 22 November 1956. Run for 2-3 hours prior to need, and off 1 1/2 hours before building vacated.
Panelec (Great Britain) LtdRecent move to new offices have delayed sending instructions for the electrical floor heating; they will be forwarded soon
Panelec (Great Britain) LtdRegarding request for instruction for the heating system in Aldeburgh Church. Not possible to compile a single set of instructions to cover the various applications of floor heating. Need to contact Christy Bros Ltd to confirm switch gear; then will forward notes.
Panelec (Great Britain) LtdInstalment 2 for £400 is due Mr Reade for work done on Catholic Church in Aldeburgh
Arthur Young / Allan D ReidConfirms that the tender includes pulling the tower down and roofing it over. The architect will be interviewing Reade about extras. Bill intends the Leiston money to be borrowed. Anxious to complete the job before bad weather. Bill & Christine [?] in Scotland and writer will report on Bill taking up duties. Fr Lunley is very sick man - wherever he goes he will need someone liken Mrs Hebb (Bill's housekeeper) as his memory is quite unreliable. As for chapel here [Holy Family and St Michael's, Kesgrave ?] cannot use it its unfinished state but expects it to be in order by September 24 - parishioners best able to come on that date. You will approve of addition in appearance.
