Part of Our Lady and St Peter Parish, Aldeburgh

Forwarding the sketch plans and drawings for Aldeburgh Church design. Describes the church, Gothic with Round Tower (typical of Suffolk, with flints and plan roofing tiles). Chesham Bois church has similar floor area. Rough costing £1500 to £1600 a further £500 to complete Tower and porch. Fawcett Road is cramped and not suitable, but Fr Delaney has indicated The Terrace site, which is much better and allows room for future requirements.

[Original manuscript in French.]
Given to understand that your Lordship will lay the first stone for the Catholic Church in Aldeburgh on 16 July. We thank God and are grateful to you for all the interest you have in the small mission in which we have worked so much. Enclosed is a cheque for £10 and apologies for the small sum, but cannot afford more. Allow me to remind you what was agreed with his Lordship Mgr Keating. 1st - that a small plaque of stone or metal will commemorate the stay of the Ursulines in this place; 2nd - Each year 4 masses will be said for the 4 religious who lay in the vault. You may find these conditions in the papers of the Aldeburgh Mission.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Thanks, very much. Do not know whether I can fix the Masses on the Parish [indecipherable] as there is no money to cover this. Will look up the agreement when I find it. (Mentioned it to Archbishop Keating in my Letter)."

Bishop Cary quotes a letter to Fr Delaney dated 19/12/1919 from Bishop Keating. In it the £110 from Sr Superior (Ursulines) for 4 annual Masses and a commemorative tablet in the new [Aldeburgh] church has been invested by the Board of Finance. It is the wish of the community that £50 given to Canon Tonks last August should be added to the larger sum and used for the Endowment or Building Fund. Bishop Keating is willing for the surplus to be used as such but notes that she does not wish it to be used the temporary Oratory.
Bishop Cary directs Canon Tonks to look at the books at about or anterior to that date.

A demand by Mr Yorke for £215 is incorrect. Purchase money for Leiston site was collected by Leiston people. "The nun" left £40 in your hands for purchase of land in Aldeburgh, and a further sum with the Bishop sufficient to complete the purchase of £150. You should contact Mr Yorke and explain the mistake.

Canon Tonks has been instructed by the Board of Finance that in the light of the Bishop having already been generous towards Leiston, they cannot advise him to cover the £180 debt. Suggests Leiston congregation try to meet it themselves and if not possible then ask the Finance Board for a Loan.

Mr Chas A Christmas ("Elmbank", Leiston, Suffolk) says that Fr Delaney is still unable to write. He encloses an account and asks the Bishop if he can write-off £130 debt on the church account. The opening of the church has brought great happiness and awakened a new spirit towards one another and to the priest.

Deeds being sent on; trustees as suggested by the Bishop; one conveyancing used for both sites. Plans and estimates to be forwarded. Smyth of Leiston is a cabinet maker and house furnisher who has started a little building; Reade is a good builder. Comparison of each bidders proposals.

Cannot form an estimate of income from the visitors during the season, therefore will ask Canon Ashmole for an application form for the Poor Mission fund soon. Costs of furnishing, repairing and decorating the presbytery were high; the nuns only advanced half his last quarter salary; getting the workmen our the house (fourteen of them) was an issue. No problem with putting the chapel on the garden in fact he might be able to get an additional strip of land as a gift. After his return from Paris, Fr Delaney hopes to do great things with building fund and maintenance fund. Would like to get building soon since it is difficult to accommodate the existing congregation without including visitors. Numbers are increasing 3 recantations in both Aldeburgh and Leiston; four ready for full baptism; three babies for baptism.

Mr Young, very entertaining and interested in the project, he has taken measurements and will draw up plans and scheme. Says that £1,000 will not get a lot but he will do his best for Fr Delaney. Mr Dermott may make over a plot of land adjacent to the presbytery - the site would then be 100 ft frontage on Fawcett Road with a depth of 64ft. Reminded the Bishop about petrol and states that he has sold his old motorcycle and bought a new one for £55 , this year's model.

A draft notice. Note at top: “This is interesting was typed for the congregation to read.”

Aldeburgh. A presbytery has been purchased, and repairs executed, amounting in all to £900. The presbytery has been fitted up & furnished. A temporary Oratory has been fitted up & furnished. A site consisting of 6 plots of land has been purchased freehold.
A sum of £100 for the building of a Church at Aldeburgh has been found [annotation in a different hand: ”by Bp Keating!”].
A Catholic architect has been engaged, & I hope to begin the building of the Church early in 1921, to be completed & opened on the Feast of the S. Heart 1921.
A little over a year ago the Bishop wrote me concerning the approaching departure of the French Community, & whilst allowing me a little while to see what I could do to save the two missions of Aldeburgh & Leiston, which I had founded, told me that the Diocese could do nothing to help me.
In this time at Leiston a freehold site has been purchased. A Church has been erected & finished, Lighting installations have been paid for. Ornaments, Sacred vessels & Vestments have been secured. A motor cycle has been purchased by means of which I have been able to hold regular services at Leiston & visit my large district of 20 miles radius.
Anyone can read between the lines of this short review, & doubtless one will ask how has it all been done, because apart from all this there has been the up-keep of the two missions, & personal & household expenses.
Concerning the up-keep of the two missions, this has been a difficult matter for the last year but I am to be relieved of this in the future by the perfect organisation & running of an Altar Society in each Mission.
As regards other expenses, this will also be an easier mater in the future.
With all this bright & happy outlook, there is yet a stranglehold on the mission.
It may be asked I have said, how has all this good work been accomplished. Doubtless with much personal self-sacrifice, & at most times by allowing personal & household debt to stand & accumulate in order to keep the missions afloat, & supply all necessary for the continuance of the Divine Services. That is I say now a stranglehold & I am being pressed for payment, I have been requested to try & settle all by Dec 1st 1920 & in order to do this I shall need at least £100.
I present this little review to you & appeal to you to stretch out a helping hand to me. I do not come to you before my days work, but at the close, when though tired and weary, I feel happy & thank God, that He has given me the courage and strength to face the crisis, to work for Him, His Holy Church & for you all & that he has blessed & made that work prosper.
I intend to have a flag day on Sunday Nov 28th & I trust in Divine Providence & your generous Catholic hearts that you will enable me to surmount my difficulties on Dec 1st.
Praying God to bless you & yours.
I am
Yours devotedly etc.
V.D.

Did the Bishop inform Fr Delaney warning that she is a nuisance writing reams of pages which the Bishop drops in the waste bin? She states that Fr Delaney is spreading scandal about her and saying she has left the mission. She states that Fr Delaney would be better attending to his duties instead of visiting the picture house with his nieces and his maid (19, called by him a "housekeeper"). People of Aldeburgh horrified that he went to the pictures twice during Holy Week (Monday and Maundy Thursday). She encloses a cheque - the proceeds of a sale for Fr Delaney - and asks the Bishop to forward it to the priest. She has a number of other, serious, concerns which she wants to tell to the Bishop (but cannot get to Northampton due to her Gout) if he or a representative could come, she will share them.

Sends a little Christmas present. He might visit in the New Year provided no snow - the accident makes him fearful. An investment of £700-5-0 at 6.5% not refused. The St Chad's plans for the grotto [?] have an enormous cost: £900 -5-0. The chapel will cost over £200. He told Fr Boscali that he could not afford that as all his money is tied up. The £1000 is untouched and reserved for the Church.

Forgot to mention the proposed sanctuary to The Sacred Heart. Money will be paid when needed. Went to St Joseph's but could not find the Bishop's brother's grave. Fr Boscali asks, when Bishop is in Birmingham, if he could see the Lourdes Chapel and the proposed grotto in the gas meter place. Jackson thinks this grotto is an unnecessary expense. The window to Our Lady of Lourdes will be there to be seen.

Pleased to give £1000 for the new church i Aldeburgh - also offers altar and statue when it is built. It was a treat to have a few words with the Bishop. Sorry about Sr Joseph who was always kind to him. A sister asked to put her in the Johnson Fund and he did not have the heart to refuse - but thinks it is a waste of money. Visiting the grave at St Joseph's this week and will say a prayer for him [?] for the Bishop. "I think you have given me rather a large order."
