Part of Our Lady and St Peter Parish, Aldeburgh

Forwarding the sketch plans and drawings for Aldeburgh Church design. Describes the church, Gothic with Round Tower (typical of Suffolk, with flints and plan roofing tiles). Chesham Bois church has similar floor area. Rough costing £1500 to £1600 a further £500 to complete Tower and porch. Fawcett Road is cramped and not suitable, but Fr Delaney has indicated The Terrace site, which is much better and allows room for future requirements.

Disposition of deed, etc. is a matter for Fr Delaney and Canon Tonks to sort out. Fiance is nothing to do with Mr Yorke. Fr Delaney bought the 4 plots and the presbytery in his own name. They were conveyed to the Bishop and others; however, the plots were no longer needed once a new site was found. The same process has happened for this site - acquired by Fr Delaney, subsequently to be conveyed to the Bishop and others. Fr Delaney has deposited the deeds with the bank and paid a deposit because he was concerned not to lose the site. Sort it out between you and send on the deeds for the plots to settle with Mr Reade - it being a small matter but it is hindering things.

Excellent start: rent-free house and gardens; sites for Aldeburgh & Leiston chapels secured. Need to check on conveyance restrictions and re-convey the buildings to Diocesan Trustees (suggested names: Bishop, Fr Delaney, Fr Hugh Parker, Fr Austin O'Sullivan), take your solicitor's advice. Model Trust Deed available. Leiston chapel seems cheap - but need to consider extension in the future, hence make the walls higher to avoid tunnel appearance. For maintenance, use Mission receipts, but in the intervening months Bishop would provide funds through the Poor Mission Fund (Canon Ashmole will send an application form).

Application for Poor Mission Fund, make it payable from 1st Jan. but not it is retrospective so first instalment will be April 1st. Restrictions on plots: Trust deeds to be kept in Diocesan safe. Cannot start building until you have half the money, Bishop will give a substantial donation. Hire Town Hall or similar to obtain a breathing space? Talk to your friend about his intentions for the house - do not risk reversion by being too precipitate - could make use of the chapel as a school or parochial hall.

Bishop Cary quotes a letter to Fr Delaney dated 19/12/1919 from Bishop Keating. In it the £110 from Sr Superior (Ursulines) for 4 annual Masses and a commemorative tablet in the new [Aldeburgh] church has been invested by the Board of Finance. It is the wish of the community that £50 given to Canon Tonks last August should be added to the larger sum and used for the Endowment or Building Fund. Bishop Keating is willing for the surplus to be used as such but notes that she does not wish it to be used the temporary Oratory.
Bishop Cary directs Canon Tonks to look at the books at about or anterior to that date.

Grants faculties to: Fr Pearce - for convents in Aldeburgh & Woodbridge; Fr Fabian Dix for Aldeburgh, Leiston and the Convents
Does not know how he will get to Aldeburgh with getting to and from Cromer and Woodbridge - a case for an aeroplane!
Regarding the Coats of Arms [on reredos design] does not know what the Cardinal has to do with it - but put in his arms if you wish!
Thanks for looking after church for Jim Mullett

Bishop would like to know who is using his name in such a manner. He denies ever having mentioned Mrs Parnell other than to ensure F Delaney could understood her better than the foreigners [sic] who preceded him. Suggests that her writing to delay the cheque shows a concern fro Fr Delaney. Hence she should take the cheque herself and talk to Fr Delaney and commiserate with him on his accident, otherwise reconciliation will be more difficult.

Bishop Keating considers 20ft x 68 ft hut is adequate, and a bargain at £90. He will give the money to the Mission provided:

  1. site is free of restrictions,
  2. Fr Delaney approves and supports this
  3. Congregation guarantee to obtain the funds for everything else - removal, re-erection, fittings and furnishings.
Their zeal and generosity gave the Bishop great satisfaction.

Fr Basil Mawson OSB is visiting - may he hear confessions and say Mass? Fr Annotrony[?] plans leave - will you grant permission for this? Fr Donovan was in Dublin and went to a convent to say Mass. The Superioress said that a priest, on sick leave and from Northampton Diocese, was also saying Mass - he was Fr Delaney, however, he has left the place suddenly.

How do things stand with reference to deeds in Aldeburgh? Has one to sell four plots to Mr W C Reade. The other for the church site is held in a bank without being signed by any of the trustees (Bishop, Peacock, Parker, Delaney). This should have been done before the transaction went to the Bank. How are we to know what has been purchased if we do not see the documents? We have no title to the property?

A demand by Mr Yorke for £215 is incorrect. Purchase money for Leiston site was collected by Leiston people. "The nun" left £40 in your hands for purchase of land in Aldeburgh, and a further sum with the Bishop sufficient to complete the purchase of £150. You should contact Mr Yorke and explain the mistake.

Mr Yorke has revealed that the deed for the Church is in Fr Delaney's name and held by the bank. Bishop cannot be asked to sign the deed of sale for the four plots without receiving this deed. Is Fr Delaney going to transfer the deeds as requested? Hope you are making a rapid progress towards complete recovery.

Bishop asked Canon Peacock to check out monies paid by the Ursuline Nuns in 1919 and subsequent payments associated with that. The workings are split between Aldeburgh and Leiston and cover the period from 13 December 1919 to 10 September 1922.
13-12-1919: Nuns £100 received
2-10-1920: "Yorke purchase" £110
10-9-1920: "Advance to Fr D [Delaney] for Hut as chapel [Leiston] £100

Did the Bishop inform Fr Delaney warning that she is a nuisance writing reams of pages which the Bishop drops in the waste bin? She states that Fr Delaney is spreading scandal about her and saying she has left the mission. She states that Fr Delaney would be better attending to his duties instead of visiting the picture house with his nieces and his maid (19, called by him a "housekeeper"). People of Aldeburgh horrified that he went to the pictures twice during Holy Week (Monday and Maundy Thursday). She encloses a cheque - the proceeds of a sale for Fr Delaney - and asks the Bishop to forward it to the priest. She has a number of other, serious, concerns which she wants to tell to the Bishop (but cannot get to Northampton due to her Gout) if he or a representative could come, she will share them.
