Bishop Butler's secretary (Fr Richard More Sutherland) writing to inform Fr Wace that the bishop is already engaged in Hitchin on the day. "Why not ask Columba from Shack..."? Open invitation stay with him overnight for a meal.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Suggest Canons Burditt and Frost and Frs Philpot and Wace for Commission on the division of the [Northampton] Diocese.
Downham Market is an issue on which we must stand - "whatever the personal holiness of Ossie (and God alone is the Judge here), he is corrupting a holy thing - and this is the hidden evil." Unwavering leadership is required. Confront Ossie with the obedience he owes, and, that the Pope has formally specified the circumstances in which the rite may be celebrated.
Tony Sketch should be given Downham market as his charge and say a publicised Mass there.
PPs (Aldeburgh, Wymondham, Felixstowe and Ipswich) make change-over on October 7th.
An issue the Bishop has been alerted to by Fr Harry Wace after a letter from a parishioner. Matter involves the decisions made by the Beccles Committee - diocesan needs must be judged by diocesan criteria.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop William [Llewellyn] of Lynn cannot attend due to a prior engagement. Prays that the chapel will be well used for pryaer fo runity. Notes that Fr Wace is leaving Lynn soon and thanks him for all that he has done to facilitate the progress of Christian Unity.
CorrespondentBishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] writing about problems associated with the Bishop of Northampton taking on responsibility for Red Mount Chapel. 1. is it in King's Lynn Borough's power to effect this handover? 2. Whilst happy for planned ecumenical use, shoudl it be handed over to KL's Council of Churches? Composition of committee of management. Waiting for a reply from Bishop Grant. He hopes these can be resolved easily.
[manuscript annotations in pencil on reverse - notes arising from the letter] [by Fr Hammond?]
Received documents for King's Lynn and for Kettering. Will sign them presuming they have been vetted - do not know anything about Fr Wace's financial position - but cannot go back at this stage.
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Sending Fr Brown the Laicization notes obtained in America. The process, relating to Chris White, needs startingro scratch as nothing has been done for some time. Mgr Wace is in contact with Chris White and Fr Brown should liaise with him when drawing up the papers.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Bishop thanks Fr Hammond for being a splendid host and working it all out for him. It is hard but Fr Hammond should consider being looked after himself in retirement as a Nursing Home or a Residential home. Bishop has written to Harry Wace as a member of the Sick Clergy Fund board to ensure all is settled properly in Fr Hammond's favour. Bishop meant what he said at Mass and was pleased how the congregation clapped Fr Hammond.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop was with fellow Bishops in London Colney. Hopes Fr Hammond will retire to Park House and be very comfortable and that he has contacted members of the Sick Clergy Board (Harry, Philip and John McNally). Lists various clergy on the move or retiring - "The Golden Oldies are on the move!"
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)The Bishop does not impose many collections on the priests of diocese - two exception cited: St Francis Society, the Priests Education Fund. East Anglia Diocese has already been very generous to the development of the Shrine at Walsingham, but, other charitable organisations could have a similar request. He would be delighted if Fr Wace decides to take a collection in his own parish. Approaching individual parish priests would be acceptable.

James [?] has written to the PPs at King's Lynn and Newmarket regarding pipe organs.
King's Lynn: Fr Wace's intention to replace a pipe organ with an electronic instrument is not welcome and he should ask for the writer to visit him to discuss the matter.
Newmarket: Fr Kennedy is aware that the matter is not that urgent and he could have a small but adequate pipe organ - thus avoiding the uneccessary step of installing an electroinc organ. Fr Kennedy is contacting Millar Organ Company of Norwich for a loan of an electroinnc instrument.
Currently only have sketch plans for St Martha's - need final plans to be able to action loan.

TS Innes, assitant to the director, writes about the explanation Freemans had given regarding the muddle associated with Fr Wace's original letter [to Mr De'Ath]. Gas board has been contacted regarding the gas fired boiler. The light fittings will have to be seen in London as there are no suppliers' showrooms in King's Lynn. It depends on whether he wishes contemporary designed fittings or more commonplace ones. Catalogue enclosed [not present].
CorrespondentReferring to letter to Fr Wace. Committee is mandated not to get into debt.
How to solve the problem of people gaining access to a school like Notre Dame by claiming to be Catholic but never setting foot inside a church. They are being subsidised by our parish.
List of children at Notre Dame and at St Thomas More schools is incorrect - some from Southwold parish included in Beccles figures.
