Connelly, Roland William Rev SM MA (1921-2004)Temporary arrangement for Beccles. Need to withdraw Fr Michael Clothier from Beccles, earlier than planned, on 1 May. Fr Andrew will go to Beccles until Mgr Hypher can take up the appointment.
Fitzgerald-Lombard, James Michael Hubert Charles Rev OSB MPhil (1941-)Beccles: Happy for this proposal to become a firm arrangement - deal with details later. Note comment that this is still a Downside parish and need to make this clear to avoid a dip in morale. Also, to send in a holiday supply from time to time to help Mgr Hypher.
Bungay: Enquiries have been received about Fr Richard from a Curial Cardinal who may offer him a job in Rome. Suggest Fr Edward Crouzet (55, graduate of Cambridge and Fribourg, linguist, musician, counsellor) who is Chaplain at Cambridge University for 7 years, also, a Downside housemaster for many years.
Fitzgerald-Lombard, James Michael Hubert Charles Rev OSB MPhil (1941-)Offer is generous and will be considered by the Council at the end of this week.
Fitzgerald-Lombard, James Michael Hubert Charles Rev OSB MPhil (1941-)Fr Edward's [surname?] telephone call advised him of the pressure to keep Fr Simon [Blakesley] at Beccles - cf Fr Sketch's "petition" at Deanery meeting - for a number of years yet. When proposing Fr Raphael Appleby (currently in Uganda but will supply to Bungay when Edward is away) to Bungay the Abbot recalled the agreement with Bishop Clark for Downside to take up the mission after three years. However, it seems that the parishioners quite like a secular priest and may prefer a trained priest to a monk out of cloisters. What does the Bishop think? Happy to let the current situation run indefinitely.
Fitzgerald-Lombard, James Michael Hubert Charles Rev OSB MPhil (1941-)Abbot John Roberts: Fr Michael Clothier is now parish priest at Beccles.
Lourdes very hot last week - not much better here.
Mrs Bramley is kind-hearted, etc. she did discuss the letter with the Abbot but also added other parts not seen until the Bishop copied her letter to him. He was delighted not to be governor and will talk to her. On way to Mass at Gillingham; his health has its ups and downs.
Watkin, Aelred Rev MA FSA FRSA FRHistS (1918-1997)R E Jefford, Act. Area Administrator, acknowledging to the Bishop Fr Kerby as the replacement chaplain for Papworth hospital.
Cambridgeshire Area Health AuthorityR E Jefford, Act. Area Administrator, asking the Bishop for a replacement chaplain for Papworth hospital now Fr Drury has left the parish.

Head, Adrian Herbert Judge (rtd) (1923-2012)Agreement covering the FMM sisters stay in March. Review/renew every 3 years. Presbytery to be renamed Assisi Convent; covers sisters working week, annual leave and remuneration (in the light of rent-free stay at the Convent.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Sides 1-3: Alan Smithies (author & poet) writes following hearing the Bishop on the radio discussing the Tridentine Mass, its discontinuation by Rome and the subsequent mass protests. As an Anglo Catholic author he holds no brief for the Tridentine Mass; discusses the 1549 prayer book (a wholly Catholic Mass). Anglicans are in more disarray with their various services, with Series III replacing good English with journalese (as with your English mass). Discusses the nature of the language and its uses, the Bishops of earlier ages; modern bishops too influenced by the popular. People do want good but simple everyday English. Appends some hymns if the Bishop would like to use any of them then he'd be delighted.
Sides 5, 7, 9: "Office for Saint Bede" 5 four-line verses; "For Saint Clare" [written for the nuns of Lynton, on the Feast of St Care, 1975] 8 six-line verses; "Hymn for Saint Nicholas" 6 four-line verses; "Office Hymn for Saint Andrew" 6 four-line verses
"These hymns are written with the intention that they should be sung, wherever possible, in plainchant."
