Re Sawston Hall, Cambridge. Thanks him for kind response to Dept's request. Asks him to assure Bishop Chapel will be allowed to revert to its proper function when security considerations permit, meantime RAF will put it to no other use.

" The endless consultation shows no evidence that their views are taken into account; Reports from "Called to Serve" attached. Concern over "The Laity Consultation" issued by the Cambridge Deanery - three issues are expanded upon in the letter: a) Priestless Parishes, b) Activation of the Laity, c) Parish/Deanery/Diocesan relationships. Also, "Requests for Articles" to be written by parishioners - what are the ground rules for such articles? Without clarity on how they will be judged and what activity might be triggered by them - this request may be innocent - but given the above they are concerned.

Fears letter will not reach him in time as he only recieved his that day. Enclosing letter of introduction to Rector of English College who will get audience with the Holy Father or a presence at his Mass. Call at English College as soon as possible in order as the Rector is the usual agent for these matters. Gives English College address.

Asking Mgr Godfrey to help Commander & Mrs Eyre Huddleston who are spending Easter in Rome and would like to attend Holy Father's Mass. Explains they are of Sawston Hall, one of the old English Catholic houses where Mass was said during the Penal Days. Mrs Eyre Huddleston is the daughter of Sir Edward ad Lady Philippa Stewart (niece of the late Duke of Norfolk). Both are fine Catholics. He says he has given them a letter of introduction.

Letter to introduce Commander & Mrs Eyre Huddleston who are spending Easter in Rome and would like to attend Holy Father's private Mass. "I am sure you will do what you can, as the Verabile (sic) always does, to help distinguished Englishment who do their duty in Rome."

Bishop has asked Peter Wilson to deal with the matter of reimbursing £1,000 to Miss Magoris. Suggests that the Parish might contribute more to the St John's fund. Thanks for the picture - "it was a good occasion."

Bishop appreciates Fr O'Toole's reports, especially his own. The resonse to "Twenty Years after the Second Council" has a remarkable convergence. Bishop asks Fr O'Toole to thank his parishioners for their "diligence and generosity in meeting to mull over the question".

Bishop Clark says Visitation programme is fine and he will do his best to follow it. Arrive on Saturday at 8pm. Bite to eat on offer?

Bishop happy to go to Sawston and commission Special Ministers. He will do so after his visitation to Our Lady of English Martyrs (OLEM) in Cambridge. Each candidate must have adequate catechesis, be in possession of the CTS blue handbook and have a certificate for the Bishop to issue.
Delighted to hear that the parish is geared to Saturday 16th May.

Responding to Julie C Bell, the Bishop acknowledges that the diocese must commit to its mission to care for the elderly, accessing whatever material help there is. He has directed Fr Peter Wilson to set up a Diocesan Commission to liaise with Social Services and address care of the elderly. He is impressed by the happiness of those in sheltered housing, but wonders whether the specific provision of a Diocesan Home would be appropriate given resources, etc. He thanks her for reminding him of "our overall commitments". The CWL have a house in Ipswich (St Anne's House, Burrington Street) which would be worth investigating.

Rev Dowsey replies to Mrs Richardson and thanks the parish for their donation towards transport costs at St Bede's. Further information on the situation might be obtained from Mgr Hypher (Diocesan Commissioner for Schools in Cambridgeshire).

Julie C Bell writing to raise the quesion, on behalf of the committee, of there being a Diocesan Old People's Home. Parish could not finance this project but decided to contact the Bishop to see if there are plans to do this.

Thanks her for invitation - would very much like to meet her mother. Provides details of his programme: (Weds - opening Church in St Neots, Fr Filmer; Thurs - Catenian dinner in evening). Suggests how he could fit them into it if she is prepared to transport him.

Bishop understands the need to consult with the Parish Committee, but he needs to act "pragmatically" with no judgement on responsibility. Note that OLEM, St Laurence's and Ely have already given their consent.

Ref Car Parking at RC Church in Sawston. Fr O'Toole's offer of land in exchange for access points to highway for church car parking agreed. Clerk of CC will be in touch to make arrangements.

Explains arrangements for safeguarding Chapel & Blessed Sacrament at Sawston Hall. Commander Eyre Huddleston feels it to be unsafe to allow unrestricted access & suggests opening arrangements but does he retain the right to close Chapel? Canon Marshall believes he has. Manuscript note: "I shall be glad to hear that you consider these proposal satisfactory."

Thanks him for provisions for Sawston chapel. No need for Blessing as it was a parish church until about 70 years ago & Mass has been said there constantly. Reservation of Blessed Sacrament is only taking up again the practice of bygone years.
