Meeting of English Heritage; Ipswich Historic Churches Trust; Redundant Churches; Meryemana Foundation
"The discussion threatened to become a post mortem of who had originally been at fault. I begged that we discuss the present predicament in preference to the past misdemeanours..."
The meeting resumed after lunch the Meryemana representatives had left. No result recorded.

Present: Nicholas Ridley, James Hall, Peter Underwood, Mark Inman, Maire Heley
"...deteriorating relationship between the Trust and English Heritage." Short description of the Trusts' relationship with redundant churches and trying to manage them. Meryemana's original approach to the Borough Council about the church had been in May 1988 prior to them handing over the church to the Trust - hence no idea of other bodies interest or opinions. Points made:

• value of pews not known (Henry Ringham orgin)
• redundant churches become historic buildings - so focus switches from use to preservation
• no swap with St Mary-at-the-Quay
• English heritage senior management changes
• Ipswich Borough Council management changes in Planning
• Bibleway Church interest - complicating matters
• drains no addressed - flooding of vestry and main aisle reported by architect David Hatcher

Present: John Gummer MO, D Halsey of English Heritage, Rev Mark Inmand and Dr Heley of Meryemana Foundation
Discussion on the actions in the past and the involvement of multiple organisations - EH admission of "confusion and mistakes"; Gummer displeased about the way Meryemana had been treated; he suggested:

• English heritage should consider ways and means to make Meryemana project work
• English Heritage should store the pews at their own expense
• English Heritage should, review its policies and structures to ensure this does not happen again

Description of the activities of Bibleway Church. No problem with a sub-letting; Sunday services to be honoured but rest of time movable. No decision just yet as both parties need to discuss with their members
