Enclosing Fr Phillips Oath, he commences at Wymondham today. Nicest man I have ever met - he will do great things. "I'm very busy - too busy, in fact."
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Advises Fr Courtney that he needs to contact the Bishop with full details of this mixed marriage and the agreement of the parties to his proposal for regularising it.
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Whilst Fr Stokes says he coming to Norwich to see the bishop - his real reason is to come to Norwich - where he will renew the difficulties caused by his departure. Fr Freeland has had to be diplomatic with Fr Stokes when he has turned up, uninvited. "..he must be made to cease from interfering in any way in matters to do with my Parish, or I must give the parish up. The latter alternative is a consummation which I pray for every day may soon happen; for St John's Norwich is a place and a position I am heartily sick of."
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Freeland from Cambridge at 9.49am: "Bishop Bishops House / Npton / On way from Kings Lynn to / Bedford hope to meet you Lynn / Friday for next saturday and sunday with you approval as / more convenient generally page seems to prefer this way / Freeland"
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Advised Fr Philips that July 29th might suit for Freeland & Bishop to go. Freeland states he is harried with all this thunder in the air - it shatters his nerves.
Manuscript annotation: "Hope it will be a success. You may look on K as permanently attached to you. July 23 / 26".
Forwards Fr Clare's letter [re plan, etc.]. He would decline offer. Repeats that present houses & land are great asset for diocese. Considers Fr Clare's chopping and changing not helpful.
Bishop annotation: "consider offer good, all for £1410. Dry rot in house, no bathroom, W. C arrangements rotten. New presbytery near Church would be great advantage."
Fr Phillips is in a nursing home in Norwich and is to be operated on for gall stones, possibly tomorrow. In the meantime Freeland will be attending to the spiritual needs of Wymondham and Dereham for some Sundays. Telling the Bishop for information, not to cause anxiety about the mission which I can look after without much extra burden.
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Signed Profession of Faith
Flint, James Rev (-1936)Advises that Collingwood's house should not be bought, gives reasons (including in very poor repair). He is strongly in favour of plot on which 2 houses are, in one of which Fr Clare lives. Regards both as very valuable, believes it would be very unwise to part with them. Asks Bishop to wire as Leggett (buyer) needs response.
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Freeland admonishes Fr Malone for "YOUR PRECIPITATE ACTION WITH REGARD TO [sic capitals] the property at St Neots has placed me in a very invidious position. I must either give my approval or quarrel with Canon Tonks...". Asks Fr Malone whether he would have behaved in the same manner when the Bishop had been alive. It should have gone before the Finance Board for consideration.
