This wooden clapper, (also known as a clacker) performs the same function as altar bells. It would be used during the consecration of the bread and wine during the Easter Masses on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Traditionally, the last time the altar bells are rung before Easter Sunday Mass is on the evening of Holy Thursday. During the Easter Vigil, this wooden clapper may be used. However since Vatican II, and possibly because of its use during Latin (Tridentine) Rite Mass, it is not currently used that often.
This item compromises a central paddle (with handle) with a rectangle wooden plate tied loosely on either side.
