1912, 14th January: the inaugural service held at the RC chapel in Cock Street. This was built in the garden of Mr Glasspool, an organ builder, who had originally designed the building to test the pipes of the organs he had constructed.
1917, June 26: Church opened
1920: RC Community moved to a new church in Town Green, Wymondham
1952: New Church for Wymondham: The Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) Memorial Church was built by Fr. Malcolm Cowin, to be a permanent memorial to those who suffered as prisoners of war and internees of the Japanese during World War II. It is the only church of its kind in the world. The church acts as a ‘Living Memorial’ and is unique in being the only church dedicated to the memory of FEPOW and Civilian Internees of all Faiths and Nationalities.

Miss Baker receives money from friends who prefer her to distribute it to small projects and not use it for big buildings. She understands that Fr Delaney is doing good work in Wymondham Mission but cannot devote all his time to it. She asks if the Bishop would allow him to be the resident priest. In addition to the £100 already sent she could provide a further £100 before the end of the year and indicates more to come. This money is from her friends and this is the manner in which they want it to be given.

"Lapsi" causing him concern - they know little and care little. But, a small nucleus of solid Catholics help. Church maintenance being done; gas has been laid on under hire arrangement at 26/- per year. 30 at Mass; more could come but expensive to get here - perhaps could say a Mass at Attleborough for the 7 or 8 who have difficulty getting here.

Refers to a discussion with Mgr Freeland about a notice in the Catholic papers regarding Wymondham [no subject given]. Would Bishop consider an application from a prises about to leave a religious order? This priest can get testimonials from his order and the Vicar General of his Diocese, he also has some years experience as a PP.
Manuscript annotation: "Send times of Mass, etc. at Wymondham. I'll send the papers. [rest illegible]... Aug 6 / 26"

If she took/built a house and provided a room for Mass, could the Bishop use this in some isolated place? She would provide equipment for a small chapel and give hospitality to the priest. Cannot pay his stipend or pay expenses; cannot build a chapel. Only afford to provide facilities for saying Mass every week and help in some way to develop a nucleus for a small mission. Refers to permission given by the Bishop for Mass in a little house at Burnham Overy when Fr Sebastian Ritchie of the Birmingham Oratory (a cousin) stayed. The nearest Mass was 7 miles away and 3 Catholics in the village were unable to get to the Sacraments - ".. this is the case all through your diocese." Going to South America for the Winter and not back until May. Please advise how she can help.
Postscript: "I am Mrs Reginald Balfour. I think you very probably knew my husband"
Manuscript annotation: "Wrote and told her about Attleborough to be served from Wymondham and asked her to communicate with Fr Phillips at Wymondham Oct 21 / 26."

Does not know Mrs Reg. B. very well. Seems an "intense" poetical mind addicted to things Franciscan. Younger edition of her mother who was charming, ghastly clever and consequently always "up the pole" [sic]. Suggests that the offer is not practical for a variety of reasons and says it is a "dud". But there may be extenuating circumstances.

Includes a financial summary and asks for a grant to make up the deficit. Explains some of the costs incurred. Argues the case for saying Mass in Attleborough.
Manuscript annotation: "Sent cheque £78.12.3 amount of deficit, including motor cycle. Attleborough: Do you propose a service every Sunday? [illegible] in this matter, especially in the winter months. [underlined:] Don't sell out your capital. I can provide altar stone, vestments, altar linen, and some of altar cloths, [illegible] that club for their chalice, etc. Perhaps Norwich could send you some candlesticks till you get some of your own from congregation. Oct 19 / 26".

Acknowledges letter of 29 October. Will establish an Altar Society. Dr Gaynor's offer of £25 will be accepted. Mgr Freeland will pay rent for the Chapel. New address: 1 Elm Terrace (opp. Police station). Use "Catholic Church" as it is simpler. Landlady, Mrs Dickerson, of Griffen Hotel in Attleborough has a suitable room for Mass. Please forward vestments, etc. to her. Propose to start on 7th November.
Armistice Service - vicar has asked him to take part in a combined service - would it be wise for me to take part?

Asking for Bank details to send cheque to. Either £75 or £100 for E Dereham, but not yet sure which, hopes for the latter. Caveat that it is not sunk in a future Church but used for "a seedling" as at Wymondham. Early answer required as she is anxious to get rid of the money, "please remember that I only collect it. I do not give it".

CWL (Salford Diocesan Branch, Manchester Section) Miss Gertrude Jarvis (Hon. Sec.) after having heard the Bishop and Mr K G Chesterton [sic] speaking about the difficulty in supplying Diocesan missions, say that the "Association of Perpetual Adoration & Work for Poor Missions" is run by CWL (Manchester) and can help a little with vestments. Invites the Bishop to fill in the application form.
Manuscript annotation: "Wrote to Miss Jarvis to send a form to Fr Phillips at Wymondham. Had previously sent him this letter which he returned today. Nov 12 / 26."

Decided to wait until after first Mass in Attleborough to tell Bishop of receipt of vestments. Sent CWL application to London; additional vestments (Cope & Humeral Veil) badly wanted as mice have eaten hole sin them and the material is perished. Notices that Miss Jarvis offer included these items, so could cancel London application. Will send details of Tabernacle veils and other articles required.
Manuscript annotation: "Ans: Have asked Miss Jarvis to send you a form to be filled up and countersigned by me. Nov 12 / 26."

Perpetual Adoration written about sending a Cope (White) but CWL Manchester promised one too. What to do? Association suggested donation of £2 which is a bit high. Permission to start Holy Hour. Anyone in the diocese with the required procedure?
P.S.: Received £5 donation as a result of the Pastoral.
