Asks that the congregation be advised of the indulgence to be granted on the occasion of the General Council, its conditions, and that the nature of Indulgences be explained to them.

50th Anniversary of the Pope saying his first mass. Clergy of Europe have agreed to offer Holy Sacrifice for the intentions of the Holy Father. Includes Pius IX response to this (dated 16 March 1869) in which he grants an indulgence. Bishop suggests a collection be made.

Pope Pius IX has asked for public prayers for Peace in Christendom. Recital of nominated prayers at appropriate times will gain and Indulgence and a Plenary Indulgence.

"To all who devoutly recite the Prayer of the Guild of SS Felix and Edmund we grant an Indulgence of 50 days. The prayer consists of the following ejaculations: 'Saint Felix and St Edmund pray for East Anglia.'"

Requests 3 additional copies of the East Anglian Guild magazine and places his order for 4 copies. 50 days indulgence included for the "devout recitation of the Guild prayer".

The Eastern District has been criticised for its lack of public spirit and exertion with regard to its support for the Poor School Committee - however, these are very small and poor congregations. Clergy can use the letter [not generally for the public] to stimulate zeal and liberality. Pope has allowed indulgences to begained subject to the stated conditions.

Bishop Clark asked Fr Birch to contact the Apostolic Penitentiary (Cardinal Guiseppi Paupini) to request and extension for the time to gain an Indulgence for the Holy Year to the end of 1984 for pilgrims at Walsingham Shrine. The reason is that 1984 is the Golden Jubilee year of the restoration of the Shrine as a National centre and greater numbers are expected to attend during 1984.

Encloses photo of the Indulgence just received from photographer. Hopes Bishop will be able to get renewal of Indulgence as Fr Clare is out to get all the spiritual privileges he can for "our little church".

Requests faculties for reception of two converts. Considering an appeal to create a memorial to Canon Eeles - perhaps a stone High Altar. When in Rome in May,may try to obtain indulgences for those who visit the shrine. The lamps at the shrine are a heavy cost to the mission.

"We, moved with paternal charity, and desirous of increasing the spirit of religion and obtaining the salvation of Souls, urged moreover by the request of Our Beloved Son, His Eminence the Grand Cardinal of Penitentiary, do mercifully grant in the Lord -
