A long letter with much to demonstrate his unhappiness with the Bishop’s comments. If such comments had come after his suggested head-to-head then he’d be a broken man. All his work and efforts in Hunstanton are not appreciated. Despite everything the care of the Church has not suffered; he is appreciated by his congregation (and non-Catholics); the £100 cheque on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee is evidence of that. Many have said that he should write (or let them write) to the Bishop for a release from a position to difficult for him. The death of Provost Stokes have made it more necessary – and then he is offered North Walsham. “You are suggesting I should go from the frying pan into the fire!” At his age and in his health he could not found a new mission.
manuscript annotation: "Appointed him to Sudbury. Exchange with Heptonstall before end of July. July 17/28."
Does not have the Hunstanton Log book' but notes there was a book with cuttings and photographs of the early mission and thinks he handed it over with other Mission papers to his successor. If he does still have them then they'd be stored with is furniture at Sudbury. Canon garnet should be able to provide the required information. Mr Shanks was the builder who did maintenance work on the bell as well as created the turret and having hung the bell there.
Flynn, Charles S Rev (-1943)Sorry to hear the bell has fallen through the roof - illustrates the need for a periodical inspection of all ecclesiastic buildings. Sketch and description of the belfry at Hunstanton. Considers the school chimney stacks at Bury St Edmunds which had to be replaced lest a child get killed by one falling. Offers advice on keeping the chimney cleaned. Not kept bell bill - installed around 1907-1909 - but provides [not present] supplier's address. If Fr Flynn had not take away the bound log book with St Edmund K & M [sic] Hunstanton, I used to keep details of benefactors, gifts, dates, photos and anything of interest about the mission. "Goodness knows what it was to him."
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)A £25 cheque sent in final settlement of the £75 loan from the Diocese for building additions to the Church in Hunstanton.
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)The mass for the repose of the soul of Elizabeth Brown has been said. Visitors are coming - the church is so tiny, where will they hear mass? Wish for a rich man to help build a beautiful church like the one in Wells!
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)21 July celebrating Silver Jubilee of the opening of the Church - Canon Garnett (1st priest) will sing the Mass and preach in the evening. A gathering of clergy and lay people for lunch. Garden fete on 7th August - his cousin Princess Genaro de Bourbon and her husband will be there. The Sisters are doing very well - 10 pupils and 7 adults (as "P.G.s" - paying guests). Another rates demand - will investigate. Understand that Sudbury is down to 1 mass, "owing to Doctor's Orders" - a great pity, if true.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Bell has fallen through the roof and caused significant damage. Have told the original church builders, Messrs Shanks, to repair the damage. Cannot pay for the repairs - hope the Finance Board will. As Fr Flynn took the parish books have no idea who made the bell - please advise so Shanks send it away. Collections not good; visitors have very little money - last Sunday 6 farthings in the plate. However, an appeal at 2 collections received £6-1-9.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Programme for the visitation:
Saturday: 6pm Mass - sermon by Bishop
Sunday: 8am Mass - sermon by Bishop; visit sick /old in Dersingham, Snettisham, Hunstanton - visit to new church in Dersingham; 11am Sung Mass - Confirmation & commissioning of Eucharistic Ministers, and readers; lunch; visit sick in Hunstanton and Thornham; coffee morning to "mingle with people of God followed by snifter before lunch"
Manuscript annotation: "sent a note - saying 'YES' 10-9-90"
Information note about situation at Hunstanton/Dersingham. An experienced mental health worker and parishioner attended Mass and reported back - he reported back a clear case of burn-out. Fr Dobson did report on the meetings with Dean and VG but in a veiled manner - he also apologised to the Bishop and VG about the situation which had arisen. Fr Rear confirmed the observations.
Shryane, Philip Bernard Rev (1950-)Outlines the limited progress since the meeting of 5 June 1997 between Hunstanton (Fr Dobson) and Dersingham (Deacon Matthews). Frustration is high and there is concern about the reception the Bishop will get from Dersingham parishioners who feel abandoned - "a minefield".
Shryane, Philip Bernard Rev (1950-)Dr G Watkins writing that Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St Edmund is not a listed building but will need planning permission from the Local Authority. The Liturgical Commission will give permissions for any church reordering. If the expenditure is over £5,000 then the Diocesan Board of Finance must be consulted.
Historic Churches Committee (for RCDEA)Fr James Walsh, Donal MacGarry [Architect] and Stephen Dean [chair of Liturgy Commission] met Fr Peter Rollings at Hunstanton Church. Outline of reordering approach was discussed. The Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, the High altar, font, Albo, organ and presidential chair were all included in a range of suggestions.
Sketch illustrates the church rotated through 180 degrees, new sacristy and the Lady Chapel as an entrance foyer.
