Thank you to Fr Mossey and Miss Cooper for the welcome and hospitality on Sunday. Obvious that he had to be at Buckden; but his own bug was developing fast and by the time he reached home he was not well and the doctor has confined him to the house for the next three days.

Taking into consideration Fr Flynn's health, the doctor's certificate, family worries and belated confession of culpability. However, cannot overlook the failures in duty which had happened before - how many times without detection? You cannot expect your flock to make sacrifices if you do not. You had not acknowledged your intemperance but it is a cause. You are under obedience to discontinue immediately all use of alcoholic stimulants - another omission of Sunday Mass will mean the deprivation of your cure.

[undated, unsigned] [very shaky hand] "My Lord, I think you ought to know about Fr Flynn here. He is a very ill man and something ought to be done for him. He only has Mass on Sunday - and these looks as if he might die on the altar. Only last week he was over to take a wedding but went to bed in the hotel at once, too ill to do it. I am only a visitor here and therefore it is not my business but it is very serious I beg to remain one of your Lordships flock."

Dr Philip Marshall MRCS MRCP DPH reporting on Fr Flynn's health and well being. He describes Fr Flynn as an active, inquisitive and intelligent man who needs not to be idle for 9/10s of the year but engaged in a busy Mission. Many think well of him. He has been frank about his past problems with alcohol - he suffers from Intestinal Toxaemia which is exacerbated by drink. His life does not engage him, but makes him mope and become melancholic.

"My Lord, Fr Flynn of this town has asked me to write to you as to his condition - This is the 2nd time I have been called in for the same trouble - gastritis gastric catarrh or nervous depression - He is now progressing well but I have advised to take complete rest to thoroughly restore himself - He is a very highly strung and neurotic patient - but has no organic disease to account for these attacks - I would be very happy to insure his life - I think I have cheered him up & that he will return practically fit from his holidays - Very faithfully yours D J Rygate Surgeon"

W E H Bull saw Fr Flynn this week - he is ill with influenza and his nervous system is completely run down. Consider it a personal favour if the Bishop gives his request urgent consideration for Fr Flynn to have two months off for complete rest. Fr Flynn leads a lonely life and this is worse since his sister died in December.

R S Flynn (Fr Flynn's father) writes to inform the Bishop that his son has Bronchitis following on from Influenza. He might not be able to say mass on Sunday - the doctor hopes that he will. Mr Flynn, Snr. feels his son is too limp and washed out. Fr Page has been asked to help, but it is thought he too may be ill.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Too late to find a supply. Better stay in bed rather than risk after effects of "Flu" if Fr Page cannot help him."

Visited Fr Flynn, found him in a very weak condition looking an absolute wreck. Quite clear that Fr Flynn is not drinking - despite some of the comments made by others; he also takes great pride in the church and his house, again contrary to others' comments. Believes that Mr Bull was mistaking a previous condition's consequences with Fr Flynn's current situation.

Requests a meeting with the Bishop in Hunstanton so that the Bishop can speak to Fr Flynn's doctor. Fr Flynn's health is not improving.
manuscript annotation (reverse side): "Your trouble all along has been drink. Let me know whether this has definitely ceased, and if not, when the last incident of this kind occurred. Want understand this. I have your 'issues' here, I feel that all your troubles have been due to this. It is a straight question, I want a straight answer. May 27/28."

Thanking the Bishop for the "Xmas Box" enclosed in his last very kind letter. Right arm affected by neuritis diagnosed by the doctor as not rheumatism. A lady (Mrs Coughlan of Wayside College) has given him £5 to get away from his "bleak village", As his father is fearful of travelling in such weather, Fr Flynn will go to him for a few days. Perhaps if the Bishop is in London they could meet?

The honest answer to the direct question will neither be a "yes" or a "no". This is why he asked for a personal meeting in Hunstanton and a discussion with the doctor. Long time since had any spirits. Only touched altar wine. Alcohol was a danger in the past - the Bishop has little experience of mission work - Hunstanton is not an easy post. Fr Flynn considers he made a fatal mistake in not seeing the Bishop much earlier. The doctor will be sending a report under separate cover.

A long letter with much to demonstrate his unhappiness with the Bishop’s comments. If such comments had come after his suggested head-to-head then he’d be a broken man. All his work and efforts in Hunstanton are not appreciated. Despite everything the care of the Church has not suffered; he is appreciated by his congregation (and non-Catholics); the £100 cheque on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee is evidence of that. Many have said that he should write (or let them write) to the Bishop for a release from a position to difficult for him. The death of Provost Stokes have made it more necessary – and then he is offered North Walsham. “You are suggesting I should go from the frying pan into the fire!” At his age and in his health he could not found a new mission.
manuscript annotation: "Appointed him to Sudbury. Exchange with Heptonstall before end of July. July 17/28."

Despite the pain in his right arm from neuritis, Fr Flynn is setting out the case for him to be assigned to Aylesbury. He understands that the priest there, Fr Scott, is more of less permanently disabled and may be moved from his mission creating a vacancy. Fr Flynn has never found Norfolk or Suffolk much to his liking and would appreciate being moved to Aylesbury which gets him away form these counties and nearer to his father.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Aylesbury again filled by Scott. very stretching place owing to Government requirements at the Prison. You will never be able to keep regular & punctual owing to your breakdowns. That only you are in Hunstanton where, except during the season, this does not much matter. Will think over the matter Oct 24/25."
