It is difficult to decide on which is the most economical heating scheme for Norfolk schools. The design for the school included a central heating system with a heating chamber. But this is not until a later phase. Oil-fired boilers have implications for the heating installation but if required then the extra cost would be £900 for the building and £800 for the central heating apparatus.

Addressing the points raised by Fr Sammons:

              1. no Secondary school at Lynn in the foreseeable future
              2. Form for parents to withdraw children from Ri and Assembly
              3. Builder does not need to know why you require a partition
              4. Reverent Mother as a Manager is a good idea - no financial interest as her arrangements are her own
              5. heating. Need to keep costs within the scope set by the Ministry. Tubular heating is doubtful, night storage may be a better way, paraffin option, avoid stove which coke needs to be added at intervals.
              6. Headteacher has to be mobile across the two sites. plenty of examples of nuns with vehicles holding a headship and having junior staff. Advisable to have a woman where girls are taught.
              7. No point clinging onto the seniors. Focus on improving the Juniors and getting as many as possible into Grammar school, preferably a Catholic one.
              8. Addressing the criticisms in the HMI report. Need to encourage the Nuns to be more demanding about their need for resources - too economical in the past - we can make the decisions at the diocesan level. Managers must make regular inspections of the building and equipment.

Extension is proving its worth; for Christmas: 200 at midnight, 60 at 8am, 200 for 10am and benediction.
Alterations to the study made all the difference; the kitchen renovations are successful; describes heating. Roof estimate waited for. £3-15-0 is stipend for masses plus a Guinea for Cathedral extension.

pg1: Includes a copy of the letter to John Corps regarding the problems with the heating. Poor acoustical performance of the confessional. Dr Hawkes suggested some remedial measures.
pg2: continues on improvements. Suggests the lighting is oppressive.
pg3: Letter to JFW Corps (Sir Herbert Humphries & MacDonald) - valve controlling the heating is permanently open; thermostat is faulty
pg4-5: Consultation notes (meeting with Dr Hawkes) 6 July 1985 re sound proofing of confessional.

Aletter from Mr Sauvain (Education). has been copied and the reply placed on the reverse.
Side 1: Describes the Architect's visit to St Martha's school and the concern raised about the capacity of the boiler being insufficient for the whole school. Estimates cost of heating installation to be £850. All of which would be the responsibility of the school Managers.#
Side 2: Noted that work already done has improved heating at the school. Will bring the Architect's comments to the Managers for consideration.

"Antediluvian" heating system has been condemned by the Gas Board. £4,000 to replace. Heating in hall at Leiston is inadequate and can be remedied for £800. There is money available but will need to raise an appreciable amount by fund-raising and subscriptions. Requests Bishop's approval else many will die of hypothermia (PP included).
