Dated the Feast of St Stanilaus (April 11). Missed the Bishop's visit to Yarmouth since Fr Thompson was running 3 short retreats in Birmingham. Needs faculties for Fr Salvatore Pace who is replacing Fr Harper (posted to an easier berth). Would have preferred that Fr Courtney went instead as he is more of an invalid and less efficient than Fr Harper. Fr Pace will be very useful in rounding up the Italian colony who "Have no gotta Inglese". Fr Pace is Maltese and educated at the English College in Malta. After joining the Jesuits he was with the French i n Syria, the Italians in Naples and spent six years at "the hardest mission we have - St Joseph's, North Woodside, Glasgow. I went through that 'black quarry' as it was locally called in 1899"
Manuscript annotation: "Sent Faculties. Also asked thoughts on to help Gorleston with Sunday Mass when Stanley has left for Phanbelin[?]"
Responding to a letter of 9 December and writing from Gillingham Hall; far from well but will not blame the people of Gorleston. Happy to go wherever the bishop decides to send him and resume work.
Vermuelen, C Rev CRPFr Thompson is to be absent until 9th September running 4 retreats in London - a strain but "needs must when the rate collector drives". Fr Hughes is going to Gorleston, hope his health holds up. Ask the Bishop to come for Confirmation in the Autumn and they are also celebrating 75th anniversary of the opening of the church on 20 September. The church is being completely repainted by the men now.
Thompson, David H Rev SJ ( -1926)Fr Hughes has been advised by Fr Davidson about the claims/approaches being made by Kimber. Fr Hughes says he is known by another name, has done 3 months in prison, a very bad record, has no real education. Therefore not suitable to run a college and look after boys. Hops this letter reaches the Bishop in time to avert any endorsement which will inevitable lead to a scandal. Fr Davidson asserts that this is a scheme to make money without work. Kimber's lies and deceit do take people in, including Fr Hughes. The views expressed are from his own knowledge and direct experience.

The managers of St Benet's (RCV) School have passed a resolution to apply for grant aided status. Form 18 will be sent after consultation with ecclesiastical authorities. It is proposed that senior children shall go, with those from Yarmouth and Gorleston, to a planned Catholic Modern Secondary School (mixed) at Gorleston.
Brookes, John Rudesind Rev OBE MC TD OSB (1898-1984)Need to see Fr Webb at Yarmouth to talk about these proposals and the intent to build an RC school in Gorleston. Provides advice on approach to take before the meeting with Ministry of Education and offers to accompany Fr Innes to their offices o 13th January.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)GW [no indication of full name] writes to Fr Innes about the approach and tactics to be used when dealing with the Ministry to ensure this does not impact the proposed RC Secondary Modern at Gorleston.

CorrespondentEncloses a memorandum sent to the Education Officer at Ipswich regarding the proposed new County Modern School at Beccles.
Despite being advised that there will be no impact on St Benet's school nor to the proposed Gorleston school.,Fr Innes has sent the memorandum to state clearly the position of St Benet's school. Concerned that the school may be downgraded if the numbers fall below 100. An application for minor improvement works is acceptable.
Managers at Beccles RCV School make 4 points to the education officer in East Suffolk CC
Innes, M Benet Rev OSBMinute book
The Ministry are likely to approved the adaptation of the presbytery at Beccles as a School. It must meet the requirements of the Development Plan for little more than £7,500 and less than £10,000. Seniors are still temporarily at St Benet's whilst waiting for the new school at Gorleston to be built, which has a good chance.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)With Sterret at the Ministry - they are likely to approved the adaptation of the presbytery at Beccles as a School. There are a few aspects which need addressing: Daylight in the Hall, Kitchen/Scullery space, paved playground. Need to update the sketch to show these adjustments.
The ESN [Educationally Sub-Normal - a contemporary term] pupil could be sent to Besford Court.
Advising the Abbot that the Bishop is unable to attend to Diocesan affairs for the next few weeks, hence this letter as reply.
Bishop has been quite clear, i accordance with other Bishops, on the approach to be taken. Firm approval from him for the scheme at Beccles. Covers a range of funding/income issues associated with Beccles parish. Note that Gorleston Catholic Modern Secondary school will have Beccles as a feeder school.
typescript annotation: "Fr Abbot's letter gave the agreed valuation as follows:- Playing field £1260, House and Garden £4,100. All this will be sold to the Authority for £5360. The playground will be retained in the ownership of the Authority. The remainder will be conveyed back to Downside Abbey Beccles School trust. 'It looks as though out of this Beccles will be "clear" about £3000'".
Thanks for appointment to Gorleston - hard to leave Southwold. Financial position regarding the debt at Halesworth. No outstanding debt on the church; need to repay the £1580 loan received from parishioners. Canon Hunting and he have made arrangements for money to be paid [regarding general interest] amounting to £300 per year without troubling Fr Rudd. £60-£70 in the bank with an average collection of £9 between now and Christmas.
