[Original manuscript in French.]
Given to understand that your Lordship will lay the first stone for the Catholic Church in Aldeburgh on 16 July. We thank God and are grateful to you for all the interest you have in the small mission in which we have worked so much. Enclosed is a cheque for £10 and apologies for the small sum, but cannot afford more. Allow me to remind you what was agreed with his Lordship Mgr Keating. 1st - that a small plaque of stone or metal will commemorate the stay of the Ursulines in this place; 2nd - Each year 4 masses will be said for the 4 religious who lay in the vault. You may find these conditions in the papers of the Aldeburgh Mission.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Thanks, very much. Do not know whether I can fix the Masses on the Parish [indecipherable] as there is no money to cover this. Will look up the agreement when I find it. (Mentioned it to Archbishop Keating in my Letter)."
Received a cheque for $50 from Poor Cares in Los Altos for Walsingham. Bernard [Warwick] can work on getting the funds with the American authorities.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Agrees that the Chapel of Reconciliation is a "wonder". The gift [£25] will be sent to the Appeal committee.
"The Pope, of course said what I wanted him to say 0 and then did what I never imagined he would! Put the statue like an icon on the altar (the liturgists were embarrassed - but when HH says "put, you put)..."
Thanking Fr Clothier for the day - full of the Spirit. Good learn of the congregation's view of your pastoral care and that Tom Murray has chaperoned you into East Anglian parochial life. Thanks him for the Sony Clock/radio with the generous offering. Hope you can bring the Abbot with you for lunch on 1st July. Do take care of yourself - having a proverbial day-off and cosseting/feeding yourself!
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Good news. Proper legal transfer is necessary. Will ask Peter Wilson to set up the negotiations.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop Keating considers 20ft x 68 ft hut is adequate, and a bargain at £90. He will give the money to the Mission provided:
- site is free of restrictions,
- Fr Delaney approves and supports this
- Congregation guarantee to obtain the funds for everything else - removal, re-erection, fittings and furnishings.
Their zeal and generosity gave the Bishop great satisfaction.
"Jenny" writing to say that £500 was sent to Fr Gerry [Langley] from the Ransom Guild last year. It was explicitly identified by the Bishop for personal use by Fr Gerry.
Bishop's OfficeBishop is giving the patens as it is not the richest Mission. Cheque returned to be destroyed.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)The £5 gift is for his outing - not not tell anyone else. Bishop wil also arrnage for the supply - but keep it "between ourselves". Spoken to Tonks and satisfied that the St Neots building is worth getting - limit is up to £500.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Advise the Roman Catholics to accept a lease - a flexible arrangement with advantages for both sides. Terms of lease is for the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance, but expect it be 99 year lease with no premium and a peppercorn rent. Roman Catholics to care and maintain the building; insure it for damage; alteration would be reported to the [Anglican] Diocese; clauses to limit use to worship and prevent disturbance of graveyard; allow relatives to tend graves. Commissioners prefer a sale than a gift.
Church Commissioners (1948-)Thanks for the gift from the Poor Cares in Los Altos, and for the Bishop publicising Walsingham needs so widely. Their prayers will also be welcome.
Student Cross went extremely well. Fr Giles OP gave clear statement on need for responsible action.
Christmas greetings and thanks for the gift. Fr Crotty is arranging a meeting with the Bishop.
Crowley, Liam Rev SS CC (-2019)Thanking the Bishop for the "Xmas Box" enclosed in his last very kind letter. Right arm affected by neuritis diagnosed by the doctor as not rheumatism. A lady (Mrs Coughlan of Wayside College) has given him £5 to get away from his "bleak village", As his father is fearful of travelling in such weather, Fr Flynn will go to him for a few days. Perhaps if the Bishop is in London they could meet?
Flynn, Charles S Rev (-1943)Heard Mrs Bowles's story - husband returned to native village of Southoe hoping for a job - turned down 30/- per week as a stockman as he thinks it should be 37/-. No signs of extreme poverty - gave her something to go on with. Will keep an eye on her. Baptise the youngest child tomorrow.
manuscript annotation: "Well done. Keep an ac and I will repay you as they cannot do it alone. Be my almoner if the approve of it. Apr 6/27"
Though ill managed to keep services going - but at some cost. Christmas very sucessful, 29 communicants at St Neots. Annual Party as a family gathering resulted in 100 and more children around him. Fr Filmer to start his Renewal Mission on Jan 30th and he requests faculties for him.
manuscript annotation: "Sent present of £5. Congrats o excellent Xmas results in H. Cruis. Jan 1/27"
Mrs Temple Layton has sent chalice on, formerly of Brampton, a small silver chalice engraved "St Joseph's College, Brampton, 1888" - asks Bp's permisson to keep as a second chalice. A request from a catholic (Mr Goddard of Gt Staughton, Hunts) to purchase some land to build a bungalow for him and his wife - both of poor health and may not last long - hears that he may bequest the land/building back to the diocese. Attended his sister's clothing at Meaux [France]. Then on to Clarmont to visit Madame Betheley (was Rev Mother at Aldeburgh) who is delighted to hear of the progress of the sisters in that parish. Fr M was off-colour but feeling better now.
manuscript annotation: "1. Keep chalice make note of circumstances in your Mission book. 2. Must place Goddard's desire to buy and build at St Neots before Advisory Board and promise to leave house and purchased land back to the Diocese must be first, not second hand."
2nd manuscript annotation [red crayon]: "Don't lose this!"
Very grateful for the gift of vestments - especially the boys' cottas which can be used at St Neots. Fr Banham at Woburn has asked if he could have the little hut (used as current St Neots church). Fr Malone would like to give it to him.
Malone, John F Rev (-1970)Mrs Eyre of Hampstead has to give up her private chapel and has offered an altar. Fr Martindale believes that the East is very poor and might it be of use there?
Manuscript annotation: " Ans. Many thanks. Am writing to the East coast. Have written to [indecipherable], Aldeburgh."
