David Norris (General Secretary) acknowledging the application for East Anglia - to be pout to the Finance Advisory Committee
Archbishop's OfficeRecommends the appeal for Diocesan Funds. Have concluded the purchase of the site for the future cathedral. His own finances are heavily supported by one [unnamed] gentleman who has invested money to support the Bishop and two others. Management of the Fund will be by the newly instituted Finance Commission - comprising Canons Oleron, Eccles and Seed.
Amherst, Francis Kerril Rev (1819-1883)Currently one parish in Huntingdon. Fr Grace has kept the accounts of St Michael and Oxmoor separate. Once repairs are made to St Michael's then Fr Grace will build up the monies for The Good Shepherd - the project must be sanctioned by the Bishop and the Finance Board. He cannot deal with Oxmoor on a personal basis - Fr Crowley is a member of a religious Order (the Damien Fathers) and not a permanent priest of the diocese. So it would be rash to build a permanent residence if the Society were to withdraw Fr Crowley and not replace him. But it is pastorally beneficial for Fr Crowley to be in Oxmoor. The Bishop will think more on this.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Thanks for the welcome and the extensive preparations to ensure the right kind of celebration [confirmations].
Thinking about the viability of Oxmoor [Estate] and discussed in general with Fr Grace. Fr Hazell had explained the plans for the present building - but this would need financing of at least £50 per week. Need to work out current costs. Would like to enable communities to have independence but cannot ignore economic factors.
Overjoyed that Fr Crowley finds work in the Oxmoor Estate the right kind of vineyard.
Thanks for the warm welcome and good company. Apologies if not at best - had a mini-migraine. Offering is (see appropriate Ad Clerum) is for the "running of the diocese" and is set at half the Sunday collection. "It's not for my pocket. It's the only way to subsidise the diocese - I am not looking for loot, I assure you"
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Fr Wilson and the bishop are not clear about the aim of the plan when it does not show the dining room and study being made into one. Ask the architect to produce a plan showing this. Despite the house being over 100 years old need to remember how much has already been spent and where the money comes from. This is absorbing so much of Huntingdon "savings". Will the church need major work?
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Decision to call a halt is sad and harsh, but, a projected cost of £1.3 million would require the full support of the Bishops in the Catholic community. Hope that the work done is not seen as in vain. Have asked the architect Mr Wingate to consult with Fr Birch on making fit the "Outside Altar" for say £300,000. Despite all this, the Cardinal begged that we must retain "what he loves at Walsingham: its simplicity".
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Table for "Account of the Mission Fund of the Central District" - listing donations by mission; sets out expenditure from the fund
addressed: The Viscount Stafford / Cossey Hall / Norwich"
Using a normal letter form instead of Pastoral to raise issues:
- frequently called to aid struggling missioners due to their small and poor congregations
- ecclesiastical students expenses
- expense of maintaining an agent in Rome
- debt incurred personally to meet the non-payment for 3 years of the pensions due to 4 missions.
He does this to demonstrate there is reason behind requests / appeals to the charity of congregations.
p.s. pray for the souls of those who have died in the war; be sure to register your chapel as a place of Catholic Worship in the light of the forthcoming Charitable Trusts Bill

Wareing, William Rev (1791-1865)Bishop's desperate letter appealing for funds to keep the diocese going and especially to prevent the loss of 2 or 3 important missions "whose funds have been unfortunately lost". Obviously this letter could not be cast as a pastoral letter, he asks the priests to use their best efforts in the appeal.
