Born Ashton-under-Lyne; contracted polio during National Service and his right arm was rendered powerless, he mastered writing with his lefhand, went up to Oxford, graduated from Keble College, and then trained for the priesthood at St Stephen's House.
Ordained deacon in 1956, and joined St Augustine's, Tonge Moor, Bolton. Roy then moved to work in the Hulme area of Manchester, then to St Luke's, Southport, and St Thomas's, Bedford Leigh. Appointed Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in 1987.
Subsequently he entered the Roman Catholic Church and was later cared for by the Augustinian Sisters at Boarbank Hall, Grange-over-Sands, in Cumbria.
