Anticipated that the parish would be able to manage £500. Have three quarters of the debt covered now. Own health - on way to being completed restored.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Great job was done by the the organisers of the "Assembly and Conference". However they did not budget for expenses adequately which means a £10,000 shortfall. Central funds cannot meet this. Requests Fr Howlin to help out by giving £2,000 - "...blatant begging, but I think I have no option."
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Writing as Chairman of the Executive Committee, having read the report form Tony Snelling of Dunlop Heywood. The Shrine should operate within its means and not get into a position of indebtedness to the Diocese in the foreseeable future. This proposal would cost at least £300,000m, which would have to be borrowed and paid for. He recalls saying that funds should be built up for maintenance and hopes his position is clear and that he carries the Administrator and the Shrine Executive with him.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Need to make contact with the financial professionals (Finance Office - Dick Wilson) to ensure the large legacy remains on track - not unknown for a will to be challenged by relatives. You are doing a great job.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)General Observations - general agreement; schedule A redrafted; diocese allows appeal funds to accumulate not offset debt
Responsibilities (at the Shrine) - Director (shrine to pay its way): Bishop Clark (oversight) answerable to Bishop Grant (and Fiance Board)
The Pilgrim Church - to await loan reaching whole cost is unrealistic / uneconomic ; need a loan - will the Diocese guarantee it?
Personal Comment - transition form local to national shrine; charge to Diocese remains and must be honoured; focus on Pilgrim Church, rest in suspense
Interest charges - puzzling - Diocese levying interest on itself?
The last letter was written in haste; happy to have Fr Trafford, an experienced priest in Beccles; wished wedding at Hoveton to be valid as Canon Roberts serves the chapel, not Fr Whyatt.
John Todhunter: no mention of legal difficulties; he'd implied that the pope wished "fraternise" with CofE and that was why non-Catholics should marry Catholics. Happy to hear Gillingham Hall is secure for the future. Knows nothing about Trust money being connected with the Church and Cemetery.
Gorleston and Ministry Loan: Heard from Fr McBride about joint liability between parishes. If a loan is not required then the diocese could use this but have not yet decided on the matter.
Beccles loan and debt: the return provides for misunderstanding on the nature and amount of debt. If paid off then you are to be congratulated. There is still a need for clarity so the bishop can understand how the parish is situated financially.
[Copied by order of Bishop by his secretary]
The three matters claimed by Fr Wrigglesworth are decided by the Bishop. 1. School account - to receive deficit only, not full amount; 2. payment for coal at 16/- per ton i.e. £4; 3. Gas stove to be sent to Fr Wrigglesworth; 4. Repairs to WC to be born by Fr Wrigglesworth as they pre-date Canon Osman.
Just received a telegram that Canon Osman is dangerously ill.
Acknowledges letter - will see Canon Osman in Bedfors on a visit. Has to read letter from Fr Wrigglesworth held by Canon Osman first.
Riddell, Arthur George Rev (1836-1907)Bishop acknowledges exchange re Miss Scarfe. Bishop thinks Fr Farrell will dominate expenditure easy - a rationalisation of Catholic papers indicated. The substantial repayment dept is due to the collapse of the Church foundations. But must ensure proper feeding - without it the hardiest collapse. Ordero!
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Summary of finances issued to the congregation by the parish priest. 1995 compared with 1994
Income and expenditure itemised under broad headings showing a surplus of £205 and £166.13 in current account.
Comment that visitors help; debt paid off; still need £2000 to rewire the house - a job not done in 1990.
Letter: Fr Malone should deal with SV Ekins as he sees fit regarding the sale of the plot for the old church. A delay may find a better price. Included is a "line to help you with your appeal"
Blessing: Blessing for Fr Malone to ultimately redeem the debt owing due to the purchase of the Church at St Neots. He is obliged, with the Bishops authority, to seek money form a wider public. The cost for converting the Baptist Chapel was met by the Guild of Our Lady of Ransom (some £500).
Wonders how the bishop arrived at the sum proposed for Fr Wrigglesworth. Offers his side of what is owed and why. Mentions a missing bath[!]. But he is too weary to go into further details. "Not strong enough to bear extyra worries... very less well this evening".
Osman, George Ernest RevCanon Tonks has been instructed by the Board of Finance that in the light of the Bishop having already been generous towards Leiston, they cannot advise him to cover the £180 debt. Suggests Leiston congregation try to meet it themselves and if not possible then ask the Finance Board for a Loan.
Tonks, Joseph Rev (1863-1943)John Hawkes is a headmaster about to retire from Cranford and hopes to work for the Shrine from Easter. Would buy Dow House (giving back to the Diocese on his death) and says "not need much remuneration" as he will have his pension. Fr Birch is thinking of Mr Hawkes a the "Bursar" with responsibility and overall supervision of the residential side of pilgrimages. Fr Birch hopes to put these proposals to the Shrine Council on 11 November, if the Bishop approves.
Fr Birch will have a shortfall of 15,000 - can he approach Fr Wilson?
Manuscript ps: "(By the way, we could repay the 15,000 immediately if Dow House is sold)"
Discussion about the suitability and availability of John Hawkes as a Bursar for the Shrine. Accommodation at Elmham House, Aelred House and Dow house - changes and Claude [Fisher] interest. Fr Birch's efforts to funnel donations (amounting to £29,826 this year) into the Building Fund will leave him needing £15,000 for the new pilgrim season.
manuscript p.s: "By the way we could repay the £15,000 immediately if Dow House is sold"
Discussion on costs associated with Slipper Chapel development. Debts mounting and may need to request a loan. Need to be sure of who is making a donation so that they are not asked repeatedly.
Birch, Clive Rev SM LGSMCheque to pay off arrears on Shrine account - will need to re-arrange the investments.
Confusion over where and when Masses are to be said - request confirmation and a list of Masses
Leiston debt is £115, advice sent by Canon Tonks. Offers a number of options to deal with the debt - e.g. his own life policy. Wants to clear as much of the debt as possible so as not to encumber the next priest into Aldeburgh. Parishioners have given £10 for Masses to be said. Building fund stands at £194. The Conference suggestion is for St Peter to be the saint to whom the church is dedicated. FR Davidson continues in manuscript on side 2 to say that he has no obligation to leave the money to his family, they will get his capital anyway.
Manuscript annotation: "Leave old debts alone. [?] at A. & L. pro [?]. If you are minded to be generous I'd prefer it to go towards building question for the time being. Make a list of those who leave £10 or [?][?], say Mass yourself. Don't be frightened. Don't fall into panic or be moved to sentiment!"
Surprised about the size of the contribution asked for to service the debt from the Assembly.
He has appealed to the congregation - not mentioning the sum required - and enclosed £250 cheque with the expectation that another will be sent after April 16th (after the Easter Draw.
