Bishop Clark to Bishop Guazzelli: Walsingham Celebrations on 13 May

13 May in the Paddington area to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of opening of the Anglican Shrine at Walsingham. This is a week after the synod vote on Anglican/Methodist reunion. There may be a protest against this scheme there. Rather delicate position for the RCs as we cannot be seen publicly associating with opposition to the scheme.

Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)

Bishop Murphy-O'Connor to the Apostolic Delegate: Eucharistic celebration at Walsingham

He sets out the background to the event: joint prayers, penitential walk, separate celebration of the Eucharist. The latter was to be in the open air but a torrential downpour meant the celebration was transferred to the large Anglican Church. He addresses the points raised in the Apostolic Delegate's letter. Unusual circumstances forced this to occur, but at no point was there any misunderstanding concerning the degree of "unity and disunity"; the local Ordinary approved; the celebration was conformant with the principle no 59 in the Ecumenical Directory.

Fr Birch to Bishop Clark: Bishops and their Croziers

Small card with typed post script [possibly an inclusion with the copy of letter to Cardinal Hume sent to the Bishop; undated but about 14 July 1981]
"A small thought has occurred to me... Liturgically speaking, is not the National Shrine of Our Lady 'Neutral' Ground, so that every Bishop of England and Wales could feel he has the right to use his crozier in liturgical celebrations here? ... in a large concelebration only the principal would use his crozier, as is the usual pattern"
