Having heard from a reliable source that Fr Flynn had missed celebrating mass on Passion, Palm and Low Sundays, omissions of duty that Fr Flynn had failed to inform the Bishop about, the Bishop demands a full explanation in accordance with canon law 1947ff and 2182ff.
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Mr Holmes decision to remove his boy from the Catholic school goes contrary to the Laws of the Catholic Church. Such an act cannot be done without the Bishop's permission. So the matter is not closed as it will remain open until Judgement Day at which time he will have to account for his act. Fr Eeles will do his duty by Raymond.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)Fr Dinley has 140 candidates for confirmation but only two sponsors. He quotes Canon 794 saying that the sponsor should not stand for more than two. If the Bishop is satisfied there is no need to reply.
Manuscript annotation: "Ans: We cannot follow this Canon - one man is sufficient for males & one woman for females. June 28/27."
Fr Vermeulen may not recover the use of his left arm; arrangements are being made to move him back to Belgium. Enclosed [not present] is a petition to receive a convert, and, a petition to set right a "Ne termere" case.
manuscript annotation: "Sent new faculties to Fr Campbell and also [?] Reparations Pm[?] Fr Vermeulen!"
Fr Flanagan is asking for permission under Canon Law to take legal action against Sister Mary of Aldeburgh Convent. Canon Tonks has a copy of the "grave statement".
Manuscript annotation (on reverse of page): "Kindly write and say that I cannot and will not grant such permission +Laurence B. of N."
Canon Law 2335 no longer automatically bars a Catholic from masonic groups unless that group is known to be hostile to the Church, in which case the Catholic is excommunicated. Bishops of England and Wales clarify a Catholics' standing with Freemasonry membership, anticipating changes to Canon Law. The catholic wishing to join a masonic group should contact his Bishop.
Priest, religious and members of Secular institutions are still forbidden to accept membership of the Masonic Order or similar organisation.
Massive incoming post causes delay. Can debate the central point of the letter: the inadequacy of the New Order Mass compared to the Tridentine Mass. Vatican II debated extensively and profoundly and from there was promulgated the "Constitution of the Sacred Piturgy" in 1963 from which came the April 1969 Apostolic letter of Pope Paul. Fr Baker has known of the1970 Hierarchy directive and has deliberately put his Bishop in an impossible position but is following Canon Law; he could have acted summarily.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Laying out the issues which the Bishop had to consider along with the historic background and identifying the parts of relevant Canon Law, the Bishop invites Fr Baker to resign as Parish Priest in Downham Market
Grant, Charles Alexander Rev LCL BA (1906-1989)Fr D Morgan (Bishop's Secretary) provides a copy of the letter from Bishop Grant to Fr Baker, to be hand delivered by Fr Hammond. The Bishop had hoped that time would heal (the Code does not provide for a time limit to Fr Baker to reply). However, anxious by the activities of Fr Peter Morgan and the pastoral situation seemed to offer a way out without a rumpus.
Bishop's OfficeGood news that the eye surgery date is fixed for the Bishop.
Item 3 in the Ad Clerum 7/75 - Travelling Mission (TM) - an example of why there was cynicism in the Deanery meeting, decisions are made without consultation. The small committee to discuss this matter was to have its first meeting on 18 November. The next paragraph discusses the value of the TM for small parishes in the time of a priest shortage.
The blunt statement in the Ad Clerum about the TM makes it more difficult to take future consultation seriously.
Second matter is about the doxology of the Eucharistic Prayers - how can one stop the congregation from spontaneously joining in, as they have been doing so for many years? More the spirit of the law than the letter of the law.
Off to USA for his annual holiday but hopes the Bishop won't take a rigid line on the second matter and put priests in a very embarrassing sitiuation with their congregations.
Fr Baker's ministry is harmful being direct and open disobedience of the Holy See. A review of the documents sent by Fr Baker were considered by the Synodal Examiner and the Pro-Synodal Examiner as not a sufficient answer and his ministry was harmful. Fr Baker had refused to resign and hence the Bishop is removing him from his office as Parish Priest at Downham Market. He has to hand over to Father Sketch.
Grant, Charles Alexander Rev LCL BA (1906-1989)Compliments slip: Bishop Secretary: "Tony Sketch will arrange to deliver the enclosed - less the carbon - to all Downham Market parishioners when he distributes his invitations to the real Mass."
Page 1: letter to the congregation at Downham Market - explaining, now that the legal procedure is over, the sorrow he feels in acting against Fr Baker. Obedience to the Holy Father means accepting the changes away from the Tridentine Mass. Expects support for Fr Sketch. Notes of explanation included.

An article by Fr Bryan Houghton
"This article is not written to prolong the needless controversy but to bring out the real issue which lies behind the differences between Father Baker and his Bishop...."
Meetings of the Working Party on the Pastoral aspect of irregular marriages. Going to see Derek Worlock in Liverpool but should have done his homework for the meeting in 3rd week of October.
Wrote to David Norris to criticise two statements in the draft Canon Law document on Marriage - must not use the word "murder" for abortion - guess what the other point was!
The young man is not forbidden to attend an Anglican Communion Service but he is not to inter-communicate. The division of the respective churches does exist for them and they cannot go their own way on this.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Proposing a structure for handling Nullity of Marriage after the introduction of the new Code of Canon Law - Canon 186 specifically. Canon Paul Taylor and he will manage the process - no need to engage with Westminster.
The "safe haven " of Hunstanton has given him more work than in any other parish with the exception of St Ives. People have accepted him as a "normal priest".
Latin document - first paragraph: "Tibi, qui ad munia sacerdotalia in hac Nostra dioecesi rite approbatus es, facultates sequentes in Dominio concedimus, intra limites dioecesis, dummodo in eadem permanaes, ad tramitem legum ecclesiasticarum, sive generalium sive specialium exercendas." [Rough translation: "We, who approve the duties of the priests in this diocese, permit the following, within the limits of the diocese, according to the laws, general or specific"] [see PDF attached]
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bull of Erection for a new Mission in Dersingham under the Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and Saint Edmund, Hunstantion.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Deacon Matthews has permission to preside at a Eucharistic Service, which is not a Mass - no deacon can say Mass, indeed the Bishop has no authority in Canon Law to allow it.
Fr Dobson is a member of the Holy Ghost Fathers and is on loan to the Diocese.
Noted the points in your letter and will discuss them with the Dean, Fr Tony Shryane, and my Vicars General
