Covering letter from Canon Thomas Fox to Bishop of Northampton (Francis Kerril Amherst). As the bishop requested he has come to Lynn to look over the things proposed to be left by Fr Rigby. Encloses two inventories (one of items Fr Rigby has sent to the Bishop; the other of the items held in the mission before Fr Rigby came) which will give the bishop the state of the priest's house. Lists items of Fr Rigby's property which he will leave behind. No inventory has been made of the other property belonging to the church service. There is everything necessary for the service of the church. Canon Fox will now take charge of the mission. The Blessed Sacrament will be taken back to Wisbech.

Whilst the plan may provide an excellent room for guild meetings & quarters for Mrs Gregory, I must point out the disadvantages. May be impossible to find another tenant; also the incumbent of Huntingdon would not wish to pay for a mission house for which he has little use. Preferable is a little cottage of more marketable type and then ask yourself about modifications desired.

Portable altar set up ready for Mass.
Reverse: "Fr Mac2's First Pre-Vatican II portable altar. It was in two pieces - a fairly heavy folding table (made of beechwood) - there was an oblong hole in the centre of the top for the altar stone. The other piece was an oblong beechwood frame which screwed onto the top back edge of the table and on which the reredos curtain and crucifix were hung. All other altar prerequisites I carried in a big case (as seen in the photo). This photo I took in a pub in Histon (Cambs) one Sunday in 1959 - Notice I turned the dartboard to face the wall!

"The fog, which is very bad, though it may have prevented any new people form coming has not affected those who came before and the numbers remain good and the number of non-Catholics excellent; also questions are sensible; so we are going on very well"

Kimbolton belongs to Rushden parish - Fr Lockyer has asked several times if Fr Heptonstall could take it on - no, district is already far too large. Attack of 'flu with some pneumonia - 5 weeks illness took some getting over.
"Everything is very quiet here - no work & few people. I'm simply vegetating!"

Fr Drury has been accepted for missionary work in South America. He asks the Bishop to give him the Mission Cross at mass in St Ives. Also, perhaps, to admit John Gardner to Permanent Diaconate. Asking for a date of release to enable a language course to be booked in Bolivia. Thanks the Bishop for this great act of faith in him.

Have spent over £40-0-0 on fixtures and fittings but not ready to provide an inventory as bills are awaited from tradesmen. £30 of which is mission property. Delighted with official announcement of Mrs Temple Layton's settlement - a welcome addition to income. Ramsey repairs continuing- - floor far worse than thought. Mission begins on Saturday - visiting every single house in Huntingdon [+4 places] looking for hidden Papists. "... great fun to see the stare and panic ... when I tell them I am a Catholic priest". Received with courtesy and politeness.

An unhappy letter regarding finances for the mission. Bishop had told him that the mission income would amount to £84 per annum, comprising:

            • Ramsey endowment £30
            • Kingcliffe endowment £14
            • Poor Mission Fund £20
            • Miss Layton / Bishop £20
Masses said for Kingcliffe are not * as promised but 61 per year! Also another 33 masses as a promise of the Bishop. Now after 6 months he is £10 short. The bi-weekly journeys to Ramsey consumes the whole of the £30, the collections fall far short of covering costs.
"I cannot pay my way& keep two parishes 1 1miles apart going.". The new £20 Temple Layton endowment may help so long as there are no obligations attached.

Undated letter. Apologies for delay in responding to a letter with enclosures of 20 October [1912?]: new fire-grate fitted but not ordered; new boarded floor - knows nothing about it; ball[?] rejected/cancelled the work when large iron frame made - ball still on the sacristy floor; ordered a new exterior lamp; ordered the gas main to be attached to existing services; only instructions to Marriot were about the colour of the walls. Queries the cost of other items - £8-13-0 cost of priest's order, £16-6-3 (plus £7-10-0) is Bateman & King's own cost done at their own authority. Complains that his views on the work were not sought and Canon Tonks has taken the workmen's words against his own. The work is required because the dilapidation is due to others before he set foot in the mission.
