The Bishops' meeting on 13th will discuss matters of grave importance to Catholics. Hence request the prayer "de Spiritu Sancto" be recited in Mass.
Amherst, Francis Kerril Rev (1819-1883)Unable to attend his Episcopal Ordination but would like to be represented by Canon McBride.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Confidential: Marist Provincial confirmed that within the Constitution of the Congregation Marist priests cannot become Bishops - exceptionally a missionary diocese may be allowed.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Writing to Dersingham Trustees; Fr Flynn is apparently in good shape but he is 76 and they will have to take responsibility for his welfare. Bishop will be away for a Low Week Conference and then off to Geneva - not back until 12 May.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)"..It is only just to you to hear from me the extent of the reasons why this change in the status of Downham Market has been judged imperative by both the Bishop and myself."
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Compliments slip: Bishop Secretary: "Tony Sketch will arrange to deliver the enclosed - less the carbon - to all Downham Market parishioners when he distributes his invitations to the real Mass."
Page 1: letter to the congregation at Downham Market - explaining, now that the legal procedure is over, the sorrow he feels in acting against Fr Baker. Obedience to the Holy Father means accepting the changes away from the Tridentine Mass. Expects support for Fr Sketch. Notes of explanation included.

Requesting that he attends in Northampton to discuss the situation in Downham Market and that of Fr Baker. Having put the Bishop off at the last moment, the Bishop says that he expects Fr Baker to attend next week.
Grant, Charles Alexander Rev LCL BA (1906-1989)Bishop James Gillis - on the death of Dr Andrew Carruthers (Bishop of Ceramis and Vicar Apostolic of the Eastern District of Scotland) - now succeeds to the District.
Bishop's OfficeFr Baker celebrated Mass without approval in the old rite without permission, preached without faculties and heard confession in an unsatisfactory conditions. He is reported as saying "Since the Vatican Council there have been two churches, one of which is the modern one with new doctrines, new morality, and new liturgy. They can't excommunicate me for that Church because I have never been a member of it. But I intend to remain loyal to the real Church." He has been on radio and television and has caused us considerable embarrassment. Can you persuade him to remain in Downham Market; he intends to return in the next month?
Lindsay, Hugh Rev (1927-2009)The proposed Mass has no ecclesiastical authority - Fr Baker has not sought leave to offer Mass. Despite Fr Baker's defence of following his conscience he has overlooked the duty to educate his conscience - cites a few examples. Bishop says the Fr Baker is neglecting the guidance of Vatican II, the Pope, Bishop Grant and Bishop Clark. Even if you cannot accept these, consider deeply before leaving Downham Market to share your personal difficulties in other dioceses.
Lindsay, Hugh Rev (1927-2009)Asks Fr Baker not to make another public trip to Newcastle. Fr Baker has broken Church laws. If Fr Baker has trouble with the Novus Ordo Mass then he can say it in the former rite "sine populo" [without the people] - do this and no more. Better to stay in Downham Market
Lindsay, Hugh Rev (1927-2009)Covering letter for notes on the proposed Commission for World Religions. Asking Bishop Clark to review and comment (sent to others: Canon Stewart, Bishop Alexander, Bishops of the Mission Commission). Also suggesting that a member of the BCC Inter-Faith Committee be invited to join the commission ex-officio - ecumenical aspect needs greater stress. Will be thinking about the possible members.
Mahon, Gerald Rev (1922-1992)Thanks for the telegram sent on the day of his Episcopal Ordination. Having done with Rectorship of the Seminary he thanks Bishop Clark for his kindness and patience over the last few years.
O'Brien James, Rev (1930-2007)Bishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] dleighetd to hear the handover went so well. Church of England clergy heartened by Bishop Grant's demonstration of ecumenical intention. Hope that there will no be any legal problems.
CorrespondentBishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] writing about problems associated with the Bishop of Northampton taking on responsibility for Red Mount Chapel. 1. is it in King's Lynn Borough's power to effect this handover? 2. Whilst happy for planned ecumenical use, shoudl it be handed over to KL's Council of Churches? Composition of committee of management. Waiting for a reply from Bishop Grant. He hopes these can be resolved easily.
[manuscript annotations in pencil on reverse - notes arising from the letter] [by Fr Hammond?]
The Hierarchy's principle is to retain Catholic Children in schools until legally required to let them go. However irrational it may seem and against the good of an individual child - that is his decision.
Downham Market Boundaries - await Fr Ketterer's suggestion but the priest at Downham strictly speaking has no territory being chaplain to an institution.
The Holy See has accepted the resignation of the Bishop. A paragraph in his successes. The Vicar Capitular says the Archbishop of Westminster will select 3 candidates for appointment as the new Bishop of Northampton. Will then have to wait for the Poe's approval.
