Fr Winifred W Banham SJ writing from St Beuno's College, St Asaph, N Wales. In response to a request of confirmation that faculties are held. The answer is "no" but the diocesan faculties are given whenever they supply to St Benet's and the nuns. He has supplied to 10 different places (sometimes 2 or 3 times) and 2 were in Shrewsbury diocese. If the Bishop decides Fr Banham is not qualified then inform at earliest.

Mrs Isabella Alston Chaderton-Johnson (21 Collingham Road, South Kensington, London SW5): Visited Miss Dunder[?] in Huntingdon and drove with her to Exton [Hall, Exton, Rutland] for tea with Lady Gainsborough. Miss D did well and is wonderfully healthy. Since seeing the Bishop in Rome, she went again this Spring for her pilgrimage - it being four years since being received into the church. Just bought a house in Beccles and asks for an introduction letter for the priest there. Looking forward to helping the nuns and being near to the beautiful and dignified Minster.

Good news regarding Cyril Banham's ordination. Have written to Fr Squirrell re number of priests required. Requests return of the papers associated with the "Chaplow & Such" case as the woman involved has asked for them. Statistics included [not present] do not include Confirmed - ten from Southwold and one from Lowestoft
Campbell, Henry Martin Dom OSBMaking a case for the ordination of Cyril Banham to be held in Beccles rather than the Bishop's preferred place in Norwich. Opportunity to influence the people of Beccles through the ceremony and Bishop's presence and to support two potential boys for priesthood. Fr Campbell can arrange for five priests for certain and with the Bishop's MC that makes six. Enough surely?
manuscript annotation: "Answered. It is all a matter of priests. Norwich has 6 to begin with. But Beccles has the prior claim if you can get the necessary no. of priests. Fr Squirrell is the MC for the diocese in your parts. Get a hold of him & let him tell you how many priests are required. Please don't let Beccles think itself in disgrace! Jan 13/26."
Going to Sudbury next week to take on a mission whilst Fr Heptonstall is recuperating abroad. Hopes the Diocese will not be split up as he hopes to learn about it. Helping Fr Campbell preach - likes it. Enjoyed his 3.5 months in Sheringham.
Banham, Cyril Norbert Rev (1887-1963)Cannot find "George Vanlelle" in registers.
Fr Squirrell's advice - 4 priests enough for an ordination; unless Bishop requires sung Mass - then seven. Usually low Mass in this diocese.
manuscript annotation: "Arrange for Squirrell to come as MC as soon as I have fixed a date; in June I expect sometime Jan 25/26"
Referring to Pastoral Letter for Lent, pg 146. Unless the Bishop states to the contrary, he will be telling the Catholics that they cannot "gain the Jubilee at Gillingham Church" - their four visits will have to be made to Beccles Parish Church.
manuscript annotation: "They can gain the Jubilee at Gillingham Church this will appear plainer in the Poster I will [?] for [?] Feb 17/26."
Opportunity for the working people to see the ceremony. Sufficient priest secured; Frs Banham SJ and Miller are certainties, himself and Fr Vermeulin [sic], Fr Helsham SJ is being asked for from the Provincial SJ. Need a supply for Fr Squirrell. Enclosed the Bishop's letter [not present].
Campbell, Henry Martin Dom OSBWorking people will get to see a ceremony they have never seen and not likely to see again. Need a supply for Fr Squirrell. Have the four priests required. Will bishop accept hospitality when visiting Beccles? Fr Campbell's letter attached.
Banham, Cyril Norbert Rev (1887-1963)Glad to accommodate another candidate for the ordination. A room made ready for the Bishop - sleep might be disturbed by a nightingale, recently returned. Options for a sermon - 10.30am or 6.30pm mass.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. 10.30 very well. No sermon, but you may read notices, Ep. & Gosp. at usual place. Will fall in with any arrangements for lunch; but give me a cup of tea & toast immediately after Mass. It more convenient to stay at St Benet's Ap. 26/26."
Writing from St Joseph's Seminary. Travel arrangements. Expects to travel with John Ketterer with whom he expects to have a life long bond as they are to be ordained together. Has obtained 400 copies of the Ceremony from CTS Liverpool for the congregation's use.
