Part of St Benet's Minster Parish, Beccles

Unfortunately the day clashes with an ordination to the Diaconate i Bury St Edmunds - so cannot attend. Good to invite Mgr McBride as a representative instead. "Hey ho! I wonder how you will get along without a Lady Mayoress."

Thanking Fr Clothier for the day - full of the Spirit. Good learn of the congregation's view of your pastoral care and that Tom Murray has chaperoned you into East Anglian parochial life. Thanks him for the Sony Clock/radio with the generous offering. Hope you can bring the Abbot with you for lunch on 1st July. Do take care of yourself - having a proverbial day-off and cosseting/feeding yourself!

"...Rome suggests that, as a general rule, girls should not be admitted to serving, and, until a significant change takes place, I am unwilling to make an official directive."
Thank you for the History of Southwold Church - set aside for reading.

Having returned from an episcopal funeral in Portsmouth, invited to another in Liverpool by Archbishop Worlock for +Anthony Hitchen. You now know why the visitation is cut short - proposes to leave for Liverpool after lunch and hence cannot attend the school on Monday but offer Wednesday instead.

Bishop was surprised that she did not get a letter thanking her for her service - as is the Bishop's custom. The projected ecumenical school would not have survived after the Anglians had "pulled out" of the scheme. Informed Fr Aelred of her protestation.

Acknowledges the impact of the departure of a capable priest like Fr Hypher. However, the arrangement to help the Benedictine partners was always going to be temporary. Cannot deprive other parishes of effective pastoral leadership. Fr Gates will minster generously to your needs.

Wording of guidance implies that money paid by the parishioner would go to the diocese and not benefit St Benet's. This is a reflection on the integrity of diocesan officials; your parish is the responsibility of Downside; your priest enters fully into the life of the diocese.

Nashdom: appeals for support by the Abbot to Archbishop Cardinale, then himself, were refused for reasons given. Though the request might go to the Abbot of Bec next - this is an awkward situation but the appeal which brackets us with Canterbury or York for a widely circulated appeal may be misconstrued - leave it to your judgment.
Gillingham Church: Fr Little of Beccles has written about Gillingham Church (which John Todhunter is in charge of). There is an issue relating to its maintenance and ownership which is highlighted by the new Charities Act. The title deeds are missing - can only find one letter about the cemetery dated 19 July 1929 [see related descriptions link]. Bishop had stopped the holding of the Blessed sacrament at the Chapel and the parish priest offering mass there - quite unauthorised. Now Fr Little doubts the wisdom of offering Sunday Mass. If this stops then what becomes of the Chapel? Need to discuss - in August will be in Norfolk and will see Fr Little and John [Todhunter] then.

Cannot see that the Commission can refuse approval for the Beccles Presbytery (despite it being away from the church). Note Beccles has not paid into the School pool.
Asks how Fr Brewer's school is progressing - May 1 pm suitable for Foundation Stone?
Have not seen any plans for St Joseph's Modern School at Slough.
