David Hatcher making contact about being the Architect to the Meryemana Foundation. Includes a set of fees and suggests a budget of #600 ex VAT for now.
Basil and David HatcherRichard Halsey writes. A list of Architects is attached [not present] who are well known to Mrs Hester Agate (Secretary to Diocesan Advisory Committee) (also Secretary of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust); address provided. Statutory requirements are a "minefield" for the inexperienced, so a professional adviser fully aware of the legal side is vital.

An endorsement [to Bishop Riddell] on the merits of Mr Lunn now engaged in a new church for St Edmunds Mission in Southampton.
Bishop's OfficeWilliam Lunn has inspected St Mary's with Fr Wrigglesworth - it is in a dangerous state and has settled further since last inspected. Asks the Bishop to allow him to assist in work thought necessary "for I have been accustomed to building in the Fens for sixteen years". Bishop of Portsmouth has also written.
W Lunn, Architect & SurveyorDangerous condition of the hurch is "town talk here". Badly built on insecure foundations; affected by the heavy traffic on London Road. Mr Lunn';s view is to rebuild it re-using as much material as may be. Mr Lunn was not known to Fr Wrigglesworth, but he found him examining the church and stated he is the Architect to the Bishop of Portsmouth. Mr Lunn said he could rebuild the church for £1800 to £2000. HRH the Prince of Wales says something needs to be done to make the church more comfortable for his guests - it being cold and uncomfortable. HRH has not offered anything but he might if you ask.
Wrigglesworth, George Rev (1851-1900)Fine for Mr Nicholls to check out the building - but do not like the idea of him being the architect for a rebuild - does want him to be misemployed carrying out his "fads". Prefers Mr Lunn as he knows the site.
p.s. Mr Hains of Newmarket is dangerously ill and asks for a prayer from the Bishop.
side 1: Has copied Mr Lunn's letter for the Bishop. If the Bishop wishes to visit, accomodation will be a problem.
side 2-3: "not a single wall that is fit to remain standing". Expands on that - says that it is possibel to secure the buildign for another 2 or 3 years with a costly system of supports inside and out, and, "useless weights on the building would have to be removed".
list of 5 areas of work for King's lynn with an associaed price totalling 2178.0.0
"Architects estimate for smaller plan King's lynn / Mr Lunn architect"
Side1&2: 9 one-line observations relating to features of Lynn Church e.g. "Sacristies to have each two light windows. Windows above sacristies much too large."
side3: "1 Inst. pg 250 / 2 Inst. pg 350" [record of installment payments?]; "Carr stone exterior this is quarried 8m from Lynn"
Plans by Mr Lunn forwarded to the bishop. "Larger scheme" - does not like the position of the house; new school needed as in winter floor often covered with water - inspector will condemn it soon. If sanctioned then the school would be better where the new house is. Might as well rebuild the house given the amount of work required. "Lesser scheme" - if faced with red brick then it would look like the Congregational Chapel a few doors away. Tower proposed is too stumpy. HRH Prince of Wales has given 50 guineas (on condition work starts soon), Compte de Paris and Duke of Norfolk have each given £10. Lists results of fund raising - the appeals do not pay for theselves.
p.s. Canon Osman has not sent the money nor been heard from; Wrigglesworth wants to settle his acocunts
Forwarding Mr Bardell's contract with specifications [not present]. Also sending on the Architect's specifications [not present] for comparison.
Second page lists the substitutions are to be made and the amount thereby saved, to a total of £57.3.7.
Hop has revived with the bishop' s last letter. Two architects ot chose form Mr Lunn or Mr Nicholl. Some discussion on the plans available and which will be sent to the bishop. Will consult with Fr Sullivan of Hull as he is well versed in architects' tricks and can reduce thing by 30 to 50%. Carr stone for facing (so general in Cromer and Hunstanton) and cheaper because it is quarried 8 miles away.
p.s. Eldest brother, Joseph, died this morning
Receipt for cheque. Discussion on the merits of Mr Lunn and Mr Nicholl as architect for the project to build the church. Still prefers Carr stone as a facing for the building. Mission has finished, Fr Lucas toiled unceasingly, but result is not proportionate to the effort.
Wrigglesworth, George Rev (1851-1900)Two letters from Mr Nicholl enclosed [not present]. Fr Wrigglesworth asked about comparative costs with respect to West Drayton church. The Wesleyan Chapel nearby was only £1,000 for a tender, and in stone.
manuscript annotation: "2753 cost of West Drayton"
No objection to return to Mr Lunn. Mr Nicholl has not replied to questioning - it seems he declines to build the "shell" only - it is what could be done with the money.
Wrigglesworth, George Rev (1851-1900)Returned from the Douia meeting and grateful for the bishop's letter. Mr Lunn perceives much deterioration in the last 8 years. Miss Knight, lives in Hong Kong, was a great benefactress of this mission before she took offence at the action of Fr S McDonald over her mixed marriage. She will not give anything,; will pass on her address to the bishop if he wants it.
Wrigglesworth, George Rev (1851-1900)Descruiptions of the nature of work required at various locations throughout the Red Mount Chapel with an estimate against each. Total including VAT is £13,920.
