William Dodd writing to JS Hall. Condition of all EH grants that prior written approval required from English Heritage is obtained before work commences. Hence surprised to see ICHT giving approval without EH knowledge or permission. As grant aid had been given whilst the church was in use, removal of contents requires EH approval. Meryemana's interest in the church is welcomed but they cannot introduce irreversible changes. Comments on the four main areas affected: NE Vestry, S Porch, NE Chapel, Nave and Aisles. Lengthy comments on the nature of the pews and their proposed removal; requiring that temporary removal and storage be written into the lease; continues to discuss platform over the pews; outlines conditions covering: Redecoration, free standing fitments, ground/fabric disturbance, inventory (for repair and conservation purposes), specific points in pew cataloguing and management. Finally everything has to be reinstated when Meryemana leave the church. Then, EH will not object.

JS Hall - no objection in principal a dig in the church (need to discuss with Mr Hatcher); reluctant to have pews removed on a permanent basis. Dr Heley to write a short article on Meryemana for the Trust's newsletter? Mr Mellamphy should return keys (even those he may have had copied) to the Trust until the lease is completed.

Ground plan drawings needed (according to Architect, Mr Hatcher) are subject to copyright and may be time consuming and expensive to obtain. Builders estimates depend on the plans being approved by IHCT and Borough Council. Defective flood lighting and fittings have been fixed - skateboarders still inflicting damage to the seating in the garden. Archaeologists to confirm dates for dig (need to place pews in storage)

[Initialed "DP = Donovan Purcell?] - Assistant Chief Inspector of monuments (Gilyard Beer), Corrine Wilson and DP visited the chapel; view expresssed that the lower part of the chapel is a "D-shaped" defensive tower from the town rampart - perhaps converted to a gun emplacement in 14/15th century. Suggest that the museum lead an excavation, co-ordinating with others, to examine the outer face of the walls which were excavated oin 1820s but covered up again.

[Initialed "DP = Donovan Purcell?] - Further to DP's report [not present]. Assistant Chief Inspector of monuments (Gilyard Beer), Corrine Wilson and DP visited the chapel; view expresssed that the lower part of the chapel is a "D-shaped" defensive tower from the town rampart - perhaps converted to a gun emplacement (an early example of an artillary tower?) in 14/15th century. Have written to the museum suggesting they lead an excavation, co-ordinating with others, to examine the outer face of the walls which were excavated oin 1820s but covered up again.
"The upper chapel certainly fits the date of the Thomas Currance licence and we have never found any reference to the building or even to the existence of an earlier chapel (though admittedly the hill seems to have been known as Lady Hill before the licence was granted to Currance)."

Planning Dept (Keith Wade) writing to Ipswich Borough Council - no objections to the proposals but subject to an archaeological watching brief. If the floor level needs to be lowered then this must be done by archaeologists at the applicant's expense, normally. However, as the Meryemana Foundation is a charity and provided the operation is small then Suffolk is prepared to undertake the work at no cost to the applicants.
