The policy on this was formulated by Bp Riddell. The seat of the old Walsingham shrine was utterly destroyed - nothing remains except for some ruins in Protestant hands. King's Lynn was where Leo XIII placed the shrine. What the Anglicans do is their affair. Some Catholics think differently and advertise their pilgrimages in the Tablet - until he contacted the Tablet. Continue to remind enquirers that the shrine is at King's Lynn, an old port through which the bulk of pilgrims from the Continent made their way to the famous old Shrine.
Apologies for the shortness of the letter as still in bed with pneumonia.

UnknownFollowing the report from the KL Preservation Trust and the article in the EDP about Red Mount Chapel have to make it clear that something has to be done to ensure this building is maintained, as orginally taken on by the Catholic Churchas as an ecumenical gesture, and remains in focus for 500 years of pilgrimages to Walsingham.
CorrespondentInformation for AM [Ancient Monuments] grant regarding use of the Red Chapel.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Red Mount ceremony was both successful and edifying. Deeply touched by the personal kindness shown by Rev Gerald Phizackerley.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Bishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] dleighetd to hear the handover went so well. Church of England clergy heartened by Bishop Grant's demonstration of ecumenical intention. Hope that there will no be any legal problems.
CorrespondentBishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] writing about problems associated with the Bishop of Northampton taking on responsibility for Red Mount Chapel. 1. is it in King's Lynn Borough's power to effect this handover? 2. Whilst happy for planned ecumenical use, shoudl it be handed over to KL's Council of Churches? Composition of committee of management. Waiting for a reply from Bishop Grant. He hopes these can be resolved easily.

Rev EW Allworthy comments that Fr Wace and predecessors are concerned about his "beauty sleep"! "... the Roman Church prefers a sleeping Protestant to one that is wide awake!"
CorrespondentRev EW Allworthy thanks Fr Wace for an amusing and friendly letter - "I don't take too seriously some of your statements as I understand you are excused from telling the truth to a heretic". He is not referring to the middle ages but to 1968. The Roman Church has laws in abeyance, not rescinded, that require heretics to be put to death. It may be surprising but he has good friends in the Roman Church. It makes no sense to be united with the Church of Rome as it would cause disunity with his own congregation.
CorrespondentBishop William [Llewellyn] of Lynn cannot attend due to a prior engagement. Prays that the chapel will be well used for pryaer fo runity. Notes that Fr Wace is leaving Lynn soon and thanks him for all that he has done to facilitate the progress of Christian Unity.
CorrespondentRev Gil Turnbull happy to join procession and be responsible for the Anglican side. Meet and process form St Margaret's to jpoin oothers at Broad Walk. Choir only likely to sing once in the week - therefore Magnificat, but no Te Deum. Service on 20th "Special Intention for Christian Unity"
CorrespondentRev EW Allworthy writes that he cannot accept an invitaion to the event organised by the Roman Church as there is little ecumenism being displayed as the Roman Chgurch is attempting a takeover. Some quotes from the Lord's Prayer. As a consientious son of the Church of England he is regarded by the Roman Churhc as an heretic to be put to death.
CorrespondentVicar of St Nicholas, Kings' Lynn, "Geoffrey", writes that he and his Parochial Church Council unanimously offer the church for Fr Hammond to use for his autumn Mission at no fee. ".. by that time there will be amplification in S Nicholas; so that those who preach the Mission will not have to shout damnation and judgement to he first three rows and be lost beyond them."
manuscript note [Fr Hammond]: apologising for not writing immediately to thank him and his people for their kind offer.
Reports that Fr Richmond said the Church Commissioners have consented to passing All Saints as a gift to the Roman Catholics. Writing to support acceptance of the offer. The original suggestion was well received; but disappointment when a different proposition was made.

Long interested in Our Lady's cause - 1911 founded the "Society of Lourdes", 1914 Celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes at the Pro-Cathedral kensington, 1923 met the bishop at "Hotel de la Chapelle" in Lourdes. Proposes a pilgrimage to Walsingham and is asking permission for Benediction at the Slipper Chapel. Fr Gray (Fakeham) suggests this has to be sought from the Bishop.
p.s. (manuscript) "I am well known to Bishop Doubleday & the late Bishop of Plymouth was also a very kind friend"
manuscript annotation 1: "Answered on back Jan 20/29"
manuscript annotation 2: "Ansd. Very sorry for delay. As regards proposed pilgrimage. Some 30 years ago the Shrine of Our L. of W. was opened with blessing of Pope Leo XIII at King's Lynn, to take the place, for practical purposes, of an old Walsingham. The H. Father himself selected and blessed the statue of O. L. of W. It is now in this minitaure replica of the H. House of Lourdes in the Church of K.L. There is a pilgrimage every year conducted by the Guild of O. L. of Ransom. on [?] Thursday in honour of O. L. of W. as recreated at K.L. This one, therefore, is the official pilgrimage to O. L. of W. & I do not wish it otherwise. Of course, I cannot prevent [?] [?] visits to the old ruins which are now in private Prot. hands but they cannot be public or official - the Slipper Chapel is unusable. with blessing "
Will speak to the vicar of St Margaret's about what the CofE's approach is to the new ratings concessions for chartiable and religious establishments. Notes that the renegare priest from Lancaster is in town and seen at mass.

Thanking the bishop for card sent on his 11th anniversary [of ordination into Catholic Church]. Both Bishop Clark and Bishop Smith have been very patient and sympathetic to ex-Anglicans. Suggests send in a brochure to every boy and girl in the diocese on their 14th birthday. This would promote the idea of a religious life. Cites his own example of being in the Navy and not thinking of such a life until the chaplain asked him, dismissed it out of hand, but a few years later left the Navy and entered an Anglican seminary.
