Has received the summons to Synod but questions whether he personally is to attend. The Downside Chapter, from 15 September, will consider the proposal to pass the Slipper Chapel to the bishop. It should be used and has been standing empty and disused much too long.
manuscript annotation: "Ansd. Excused. Wish the Slipper Chapel business had been settled last time under Abbot Butler! I was ready for it then. But it has become a sort of shrine of pilgrimage for the [?] Anglicans, wh. is a scandal! Sept. 7/30"

Following the report from the KL Preservation Trust and the article in the EDP about Red Mount Chapel have to make it clear that something has to be done to ensure this building is maintained, as orginally taken on by the Catholic Churchas as an ecumenical gesture, and remains in focus for 500 years of pilgrimages to Walsingham.
CorrespondentMrs S Walker writes about a proposed Ecumenical Centre at a quiet Cambridgeshire farm house. Currently more Anglican oriented than not, after listing several individuals involved, asks if the Cardinal would be interested in being a member of a Council of Reference to assure people that they are not a "weird cult".

Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)A short report on the permission to be ordained for married man as a Catholic priest.
Eastern Daily PressAdvise the Roman Catholics to accept a lease - a flexible arrangement with advantages for both sides. Terms of lease is for the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance, but expect it be 99 year lease with no premium and a peppercorn rent. Roman Catholics to care and maintain the building; insure it for damage; alteration would be reported to the [Anglican] Diocese; clauses to limit use to worship and prevent disturbance of graveyard; allow relatives to tend graves. Commissioners prefer a sale than a gift.
Church Commissioners (1948-)1979 - Fr Smith informs Bishop that the Anglican Vicar offered Catholics first refusal on mission hall in Chatteris. £3000 in kitty; perhaps could sell presbytery. Bishop suggests keeping the two issues apart and think through whether this is needed pastorally. 1981 - Bishop not for a new church in Chatteris; summary (unsigned but probably by Fr Peter Wilson) sets out position regarding loan & anonymous donation - there is friction as some in Chatteris congregation believe they were promised a Church and they were saving for it. Frank Molyneux (parishioner who does the parish accounts) supports Fr Smith's view that Chatteris retention of collection funds (as allowed by Fr Donald Hillier) did not benefit the parish as a whole. Fr Smith understands that this situation arose back in Fr Gaffney's time. Two letters from parishioners (Green & Rudd) set out the Chatteris perspective on the expectation for their own Church. Fr Smith hopes to take a shorthand writer to take notes at a meeting with parishioners in April. He will make his & the Bishop's position clear. It was a difficult meeting. Bishop asks Fr Smith to "Cool it": concentrate on Sisters' arrival and Presbytery nearing completion. Fr Peter Wilson will be brought in to aid Fr Smith. FR Smith is disappointed in the Chatteris people who cling to the desire for their own Church - but not enough to form a sustainable congregation. But at least he now knows who the agitators are. 1988 - suggestion of sharing Church with the Anglicans - this would replace the community hall they currently use in Chatteris. The vicar, Fr Myhill, will discuss it with his council and understands the Bishop makes the final call. Bishop good with the idea; there are a few considerations, but Fr Smith can explore the opportunity. The PCC meeting minutes support the idea but "no poaching by either side" and "no incense at any time"! Bishop says go ahead for a 3 to 5 year trial.
Smith, James M Rev"The Vatican has granted permission for another former Anglican clergyman, a married man, to be ordained priest in the Roman Catholic Church." Mr. John Heley was CofE vicar at St Edmund's Hunstanton.
Permission had also been given for two other former Anglican ministers earlier in the year.
Employment of married convert clergymen - difficulties in funding and housing married men and their families for most Diocese. Quotes text which he will put to the Bishops of England and Wales for approval. Asks for a response in time for the Bishops' Conference after Easter.

Covering letter for the final (embargoed) copy of the address to be given to the General Synod on 1 February 1978.
Copies gone to all Bishops. The help provided by Bishop Clark and Dick [Stewart] has been the making of it.
Sorry about Bishop Clark's anxieties for his father.
A brief report on the visit to the Holy Father on 5th May 1979. Memorandum for the visit complied and copy provided to Archbishop Coggan. Lists documents which express the RC church;'s stance on the ordination of women. Hume did put four question to the Pope about ordination of women and requested the Pope's answers as being helpful to both Hume and Coggan. Discussed at length the attitude towards Anglican Orders, Hume said "... the resolution of the problem of Orders should proceed with our attempts to reach agreement on the nature of the Church and the content of the Faith."

Sammons, Francis Ethelbert Clowes Rev (1925-1975)Newsletter with diary of Church events and parish news. Includes a ballot paper on All Saints Church scheme for residents to complete and return to the Rectory.
Isaacson, Cecil J RevPage 1: Letter from Bishop referring to "last Sunday, November 14", when he celebrated Mass at the Chapel. He had spoken about the attached questionnaire regarding use of the Mass centre which needs an agreement from the congregation. Points raised: 1. No church will be built in Hemsby; 2. Offer of use of Anglican Church all year round; 3. Preserve own Chapel - as a fall back option - for community use.
Page 2: Questionnaire with 3 Yes/No questions to be returned to Fr Hyland
The last letter was written in haste; happy to have Fr Trafford, an experienced priest in Beccles; wished wedding at Hoveton to be valid as Canon Roberts serves the chapel, not Fr Whyatt.
John Todhunter: no mention of legal difficulties; he'd implied that the pope wished "fraternise" with CofE and that was why non-Catholics should marry Catholics. Happy to hear Gillingham Hall is secure for the future. Knows nothing about Trust money being connected with the Church and Cemetery.
Gorleston and Ministry Loan: Heard from Fr McBride about joint liability between parishes. If a loan is not required then the diocese could use this but have not yet decided on the matter.
Beccles loan and debt: the return provides for misunderstanding on the nature and amount of debt. If paid off then you are to be congratulated. There is still a need for clarity so the bishop can understand how the parish is situated financially.
Bishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] writing about problems associated with the Bishop of Northampton taking on responsibility for Red Mount Chapel. 1. is it in King's Lynn Borough's power to effect this handover? 2. Whilst happy for planned ecumenical use, shoudl it be handed over to KL's Council of Churches? Composition of committee of management. Waiting for a reply from Bishop Grant. He hopes these can be resolved easily.
[manuscript annotations in pencil on reverse - notes arising from the letter] [by Fr Hammond?]
Bishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] dleighetd to hear the handover went so well. Church of England clergy heartened by Bishop Grant's demonstration of ecumenical intention. Hope that there will no be any legal problems.
