Story "The secret stairway to priest's hinging hole" short history of St Mary and St Leonard, Malton . "Today the parish is based on the former Anglican Church of St Leonard - once a 12th centry chapel of ease to the Gilbertine Priory at Old Malton. It was transferred as an ecumenical gesture of goodwill from the Chruch of England in 1971"
manuscript annotation "The offer began in 1961"

Long interested in Our Lady's cause - 1911 founded the "Society of Lourdes", 1914 Celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes at the Pro-Cathedral kensington, 1923 met the bishop at "Hotel de la Chapelle" in Lourdes. Proposes a pilgrimage to Walsingham and is asking permission for Benediction at the Slipper Chapel. Fr Gray (Fakeham) suggests this has to be sought from the Bishop.
p.s. (manuscript) "I am well known to Bishop Doubleday & the late Bishop of Plymouth was also a very kind friend"
manuscript annotation 1: "Answered on back Jan 20/29"
manuscript annotation 2: "Ansd. Very sorry for delay. As regards proposed pilgrimage. Some 30 years ago the Shrine of Our L. of W. was opened with blessing of Pope Leo XIII at King's Lynn, to take the place, for practical purposes, of an old Walsingham. The H. Father himself selected and blessed the statue of O. L. of W. It is now in this minitaure replica of the H. House of Lourdes in the Church of K.L. There is a pilgrimage every year conducted by the Guild of O. L. of Ransom. on [?] Thursday in honour of O. L. of W. as recreated at K.L. This one, therefore, is the official pilgrimage to O. L. of W. & I do not wish it otherwise. Of course, I cannot prevent [?] [?] visits to the old ruins which are now in private Prot. hands but they cannot be public or official - the Slipper Chapel is unusable. with blessing "
Miss V Gavin writing from Williamson's Hotel, Hunstanton.Re Walsingham, it is a matter of regret that the Catholics possess nothing which might be used as a shrine or site for a church. Advising the bishop of her discovery that a property, "The Friary", is to be let and is situated amongst the ruins of the friary itself. Walsingham is becoming an Anglican stronghold with the new shrine, a hospice for pilgrims, a repository and a workshop.
Details are: £60 per annum, agents: Messrs Falcon & Birkbeck, Estate Office, Coltishall, Norwich.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. Present official Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Walsingham is at K. Lynn, there is a statue officially chosen blessed by Pope Leo XIII in the basilica of the house of Lorretto. Old Walsingham pilgrimage ended with its destruction under Henry VIII. Oct 1/30"

Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Parish Administrator, Priory Church of St Margaret's. Referring to a "very pleasant joint Twelfth Night Party in Thoresby Great Hall". Sagring of profits - £10 cheque attached.
CorrespondentCollaboration and co-operation in the work of the Lord. Speak in his own name - not an emissary from the Holy See nor the Conference of RC Bishops in England and Wales. A divided Christianity is a scandal.
"When you and I as Christians affirm the dignity of man, we mean more than does the humanist, the Marxist or the liberal agnostic. We affirm two truths." ".. man is made in the image of God....the Word has become flesh and dwells among us." Global problems which seriously threaten the well-being of the human race - hunger, military spending, war. "But even our moral influence as Christians is diminished by our evident disunity." IN the Common Declaration (29 April 1977) Pope Paul & Archbishop Coggan took up the idea voiced by ARCIC which worked closely on the Eucharist, Ministry and Authority in the Church - be reminded that neither Church has ratified the three Agreed Statements. "May I suggest that we must not only listen to each other, but together listen to what the Spirit may be saying."
Covering letter for the surveyor's report. Fr Wilson says that despite long list of faults Mr Toller says it is a good opportunity and £3,000 should be enough to fix the problems
Wilson, Peter John Rev MA FCAPhotocopy of an exchange of letters
Top half: Fr Richmond to Fr Wilson [undated] - Taking over All Saints will involve expenses; expanding St Henry's might involve greater expenditure
Lower Half: Fr Wilson says that with £2,700 on deposit and £1100 in the bank there is sufficient to cover the work recommended by Mr Toller. If not, then the Diocese can help out.
Foundation masses for Canon Eeles (June 6) and John Henry Lewis (Jan 26). £80 collected for the Canon's memorial. Girl take out of the school and placed with a High Anglican School without reference to him. Alternative woudl be to send her to Mrs Risdale's private school (she's a catholic, our organist). Need to get the religious into the school to address issues there - all is well in the school but it lacks "go". Mission a great success; "inclined to swear by a Redemptorist missioner even down here - provided you know who you are getting."
manuscript annotation: "Ansd. Sent cheque to [?]. No great harm if child goes to Mrs Risdale's School... But that has undermined our own Elem. school. In no case wld I allow a child to leave Catholic Elementary for Prot. Elementary. Oct 8/27"
Anglican Eucharist to be celebrated at Blythburgh Church on January 25th. An Anglican clergyman must officiate but Fr Sloan has been asked to read the Gospel. He said no, he can't even attend - was he right?
manuscript annotation: "Answered as indicated (permission given, but no obligation to read Gospel) 24/11/82"
The attendance permission applies to the people as well? But, can they receive communion at this Eucharist? Will put your answer in the monthly newsletter.
Sloan, James Rev (1913-1988)Fr Shannon and the Dean, Fr Tony Sketch, visited St Teresa's Social Centre in Acle and St Thomas More's Chapel in Hemsby. The former should be kept to support the growing community in Acle and district. The latter is occasionally used for Mass on Holydays of Obligation. The Anglican Church is rented for Saturday evening Mass at £1100 per annum. Two options: 1. buy a bungalow for a retired priest to live in; renovate and renew chapel at some cost; cease rental of Anglican church. 2. Sell the land. Use Caister instead.
Hemsby folk may be aggravated since they did raise money to extend the chapel some years ago. With a congregation of 50-60 in the Winter rising to 100 in the Summer with holiday makers - Fr Shannon is sure they could all get to Caister (3 miles distant).
Fr Shannon details new arrangements, since there are only two priests now, for timetabling Masses in St Mary's Parish, affecting Hemsby, Caister, Acle, Yarmouth. Thanks the Bishop for his induction at St Mary's last week. Will be talking to the Vicar at Hemsby and the Methodist minister at Acle regarding use of their buildings for Masses.
Shannon, John RevWondering if the terms of the lease has been given to Bishop Clark or Fr Wilson. The Church Commissioners' letter answers Rev Isaacson's questions to them. The whole project has been confusing. Have the Bishop and Fr Wilson reached a conclusion concerning the lease?
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)Back from operation and recuperating. Visit by Bishop Blackburn and the Rector of All Saints. Understand that the lease would not allow any great work inside or outside the church - costs will have risen in the last 18 months - proposition for the church not now so attractive.
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)Encloses Rector Isaacson's note to parishioners on the gift of All Saints to the Roman Catholics. One "frantic" objector has spoken to by the CofE Rural Dean.
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)Options available regarding All Saints are (a) buying the church (could cost £10,000 all in); (b) leasing the Church; (c) sharing it. (a) is rejected as too much expense and (b) & (c) leave no scope for adaption to needs. Steam gone out of the project - better to stay at St Henry's
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)Church Commissioners are asking that they be re-reimbursed for the Church. Bishop of Lynn has suggested an alternative - minimal rent. With this in addition to the repair costs, the parish could not afford it. St Henry's, though, is in good condition and has room for expansion.
