Pleased Bishop agrees with him about height of altar piece. He has had great tussle with artist as she made it higher in the sketch & some priests were in favour. Architect agreed it should be lower. Sacristan will then be able to put candles on altar without using steps.

Bishop returns drawing of Altar. He does not like it; it is too like a couple of boxes. Those he showed it to thought it was a vestment chest & liked it as such. But, if Fr Clare wants it, has found money for it & subscribers like it, he can have it.

Part of Our Lady of Good Counsel and St Peter Parish, March

Bishop has thanked Ely Council Education Committee regarding Religious Instruction for RC children. Fr Lydiate must ensure children attend and get back to school on time to avoid complaints. An altar stone secured for the Italian Camp - 30 shillings credited to account by Fr Hunting (manuscript annotation) - Bishop regards it as his when use finished. Plans for a potential church sent, Bishop wants Fr Lydiate to study them. Similar church in North Walsham built just before the war and Fr Lydiate encouraged to go and see it. Councillor Mallet is written to about jewellery. Return of chalice - check it is satisfactory and if it has been fire-gilt. Fr Mortimer Flanagan will be claiming back his furniture from March when he starts at Swaffham. Bishop hopes Fr Lydiate will be able to make suitable arrangements for his own furniture.

Proposing new altar in memory of Fr Allen. Sends sketch. It will be suitable for new church when built. Describes it. No difficulty in raising money for it. Artist is the one who did the Stations of the Cross. Total cost about £50. Sorry about Bishop's indisposition.
Bishop annotation: "gradine too high in proportion to the altar. Whole is ??? Sent back drawings March 10 1931".

Portable altar set up ready for Mass.
Reverse: "Fr Mac2's First Pre-Vatican II portable altar. It was in two pieces - a fairly heavy folding table (made of beechwood) - there was an oblong hole in the centre of the top for the altar stone. The other piece was an oblong beechwood frame which screwed onto the top back edge of the table and on which the reredos curtain and crucifix were hung. All other altar prerequisites I carried in a big case (as seen in the photo). This photo I took in a pub in Histon (Cambs) one Sunday in 1959 - Notice I turned the dartboard to face the wall!
              Altar No 1"
