Fr McCormick assesses the sketch/plan provided by Mrs Cowton and arrives at the conclusion that it is altar #4.

States that the altar held by the Archives cannot be #3 but it is #4. But, how did it get from Downham Market to Brandon?
McCormick, Robert L. Rev (-2015)Having spoken to Fr Fears, Fr McCormack thinks that the folding altar is his 3rd version. He wonders how it came to be in the Brandon garage. At one time he gave it to Mr Eric St John-Foti who had bought a farm, restored it ("Hermitage Hall") and opened a museum there. A while later it was all sold but Fr McCormack was not contacted about this at the time.
He is known as "Mac2" as Fr McBride is also known as "Mac".
Bishop Grant gives authority for first stage of the outside altar - not exceeding £20,000
Moorcraft, Gerald William Rev (1936-2011)Bishop has thanked Ely Council Education Committee regarding Religious Instruction for RC children. Fr Lydiate must ensure children attend and get back to school on time to avoid complaints. An altar stone secured for the Italian Camp - 30 shillings credited to account by Fr Hunting (manuscript annotation) - Bishop regards it as his when use finished. Plans for a potential church sent, Bishop wants Fr Lydiate to study them. Similar church in North Walsham built just before the war and Fr Lydiate encouraged to go and see it. Councillor Mallet is written to about jewellery. Return of chalice - check it is satisfactory and if it has been fire-gilt. Fr Mortimer Flanagan will be claiming back his furniture from March when he starts at Swaffham. Bishop hopes Fr Lydiate will be able to make suitable arrangements for his own furniture.
Burditt, Noel Rev (-2000)The architect will provide sketch plans and then draw up the actual drawings. Likes the idea of a shutoff altar and sanctuary. Need to update the signatories for the bank account as Fr Ketterer is no longer here.
Sammons, Francis Ethelbert Clowes Rev (1925-1975)Requests faculties for reception of two converts. Considering an appeal to create a memorial to Canon Eeles - perhaps a stone High Altar. When in Rome in May,may try to obtain indulgences for those who visit the shrine. The lamps at the shrine are a heavy cost to the mission.
manuscript annotation: "Ansd. Sent forms. Re 1. Careful about receiving children unless you are sure of someone who will be responsible for them later. 2. Convince[?] your principal people as to Altar, etc. 3. Go warily about Shrine! Mch 18/27."
Captain Curties is not all he seems. Fr Wrigglesworth explains, at length, the problems he has with this man. Fr W has tried to accommodate this man's wishes (see story about the chalice). In fact Fr W suggests that reparation, etc. should be made to him by Captain Curtis after the mischief he and his agents have brought to this congregation. God will put everything right in his own time.
Wrigglesworth, George Rev (1851-1900)Thanks the Bishop for the measurements of the altar stone - no need of it in London - but obliged if Canon Duckett or Fr Ford could take it to Bungay where Fr Guy would look after until ready for Gillingham. Cheque enclosed for offering and cover cost.
Kenyon, John George (1843-1914)Fr Ford has no doubt reported to the Bishop regarding plans for chapel at Gillingham Hall. Applying for an Altar stone (and measurements) for the Altar being made in London.
manuscript annotation: "1ft & 1/8" [size of altar stone?]
Jane [no address or surname provided], as a member of the Architecture Committee of the East Anglia Liturgical Commission, has to comment in that role without favour to the parish. Julian Limentani agrees with these comments: the proposed new Altar front must be simple (bare or only a cross), no icons. Parish pastoral committee should be consulted.
ParishionerHaving spoken to Ormesby of Scarisbrick they confirm a 4ft corpus on a 7ft cross.
Is reading about the details in consecration of an altar; will return the book next Tuesday.
Mrs Dora Cowton writes. Probably not altar #3 - describes what is held in the Archives. There are not two altars but one altar and a stand. Will take a photograph.
RCDEA ArchivesMrs Dora Cowton writes. Have received the photographs and will add them to the Travelling Mission notes already held. Provides dimensions for the altar with a description. Fr Fears cannot explain how the altar came to be in Brandon. The previous priest Fr Ivan Rudkin has died; Fr Antony Philpot was PP at Bury St Edmunds and served Brandon, which was also served from Newmarket where Fr Peter Leeming was one of the priests - should she write to them?
