Cannot form an estimate of income from the visitors during the season, therefore will ask Canon Ashmole for an application form for the Poor Mission fund soon. Costs of furnishing, repairing and decorating the presbytery were high; the nuns only advanced half his last quarter salary; getting the workmen our the house (fourteen of them) was an issue. No problem with putting the chapel on the garden in fact he might be able to get an additional strip of land as a gift. After his return from Paris, Fr Delaney hopes to do great things with building fund and maintenance fund. Would like to get building soon since it is difficult to accommodate the existing congregation without including visitors. Numbers are increasing 3 recantations in both Aldeburgh and Leiston; four ready for full baptism; three babies for baptism.
Delaney, Vincent RevMr Young, very entertaining and interested in the project, he has taken measurements and will draw up plans and scheme. Says that £1,000 will not get a lot but he will do his best for Fr Delaney. Mr Dermott may make over a plot of land adjacent to the presbytery - the site would then be 100 ft frontage on Fawcett Road with a depth of 64ft. Reminded the Bishop about petrol and states that he has sold his old motorcycle and bought a new one for £55 , this year's model.
Delaney, Vincent RevWriting to the Bishop - letter gave him the surprise of his life. Waiting to contact Mr Young and will let the Bishop know the outcome at length. Card of Chesham Bois very pleasing. Thanks the Bishop for directing this windfall [not described] to Aldeburgh.
Delaney, Vincent RevReceipt of cheque for £6.10.0 for service of Leiston.
Delaney, Vincent RevFr Flanagan is asking for permission under Canon Law to take legal action against Sister Mary of Aldeburgh Convent. Canon Tonks has a copy of the "grave statement".
Manuscript annotation (on reverse of page): "Kindly write and say that I cannot and will not grant such permission +Laurence B. of N."
Fr Flanagan mentions that the Bishop's solution last April was "a thorough Visitation of the Convent". He says that he was sent to Aldeburgh to settle the Convent affair as Fr Davidson had difficulties with the Revd. Mother, and that the Bishop had promised to back him up. It would be fair & just for the Bishop to forward the letters to him so that he could provide a written answer to the "alleged charges". Fr Davidson says he has asked leave to take legal action against Sister Mary (the Superior).
Flanagan, Mortimer J Rev (-1946)Fr Flanagan writing to "Monsignor" [Canon Tonks?] that he has asked the Bishop for an interview to present his documents and bring some supporting parishioners. Majority in Aldeburgh know nothing of "this agitation". The Bishop has been asked to visit on 3 occasions - he did not come. He is not being treated well with an external priest in the parish and interfering with it. Fr Davidson has written to the Vicar-General about this matter. Only fair to have a hearing.
Flanagan, Mortimer J Rev (-1946)Referring to the Ad Clerum 2/88 3c), requesting permission for ceremonies on Good Friday and Maundy Thursday at Leiston. Verona Fathers have offered a supply for Holy Week.

Fr Hammond encloses a cheque for £200 - half of the collection, which was low due to many people being away. Thanks the Bishop for his memorable visit from himself and his sister, Tessa.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Updating the Bishop on his situation. Bad case of shingles nearly over and almost recovered. Housekeeper had to retire due ill health and replacement is unacceptable. Sister helping out for now. However, if the situation does not improve he cannot manage on his own and may retire to Peterborough near his family.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)The Nuclear power station will see 3,5000 men moving to Leiston and area in a few weeks. Pastoral provision had been made for "A" when it was built. John Lanning and Fr Hammond visited the site to discuss with the project officer. This time the workforce will be recruited locally; Irish labour is not being recruited; most will travel to the site daily; some 600 will be accommodated in a hostel in Leiston; information on catholic pastoral care will be made available to the workforce; a room will be available for priest to see staff. Fr Hammond is talking to Fr Gilmore of the Irish Chaplaincy Scheme in Britain in case a chaplaincy service is required.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Fr Hammond has not yet told the sick brethren about the visit and says the Bishop will be free to do the Baptism. He has been invited to join the Bishop for Saturday supper and Sunday lunch.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Suggested timetable for Visitation - Evening supper with Prof & Mrs Matthias after Mass. Mrs Mullan has invited parishioners to meet you over a glass of wine at her house. A room will be available for private interview.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Suggested timetable for Visitation. Mrs Mullan's compliments at the "Vatican Arms" for a glass of wine. A room will be available for private interview.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Visitation was delight. Apologises for the Finance Committee's letter - they were asked to point out that he was not associated with their comments. Committee will be convened when John Lanning returns from holiday in Italy. Hopes the bishop "got suited re Housekeeper".
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)"With MOST grateful thanks for a very happy & blessed Visitation."
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Fr Hammond visited two retirement homes in Peterborough with his sister. He identified one as better for him. However, he'd really hoped for a place with other retired priests - but perhaps that can wait until after the Norwich [Cathedral] project is off the ground.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Fr Heath advising Bishop that next year is the 175th Anniversary of the APF [Association for the Propagation of the Faith]. He is asked to lead a Mass at the Cathedral on 20 October 1997. Other diocesan directors are making similar requests to their respective Bishops. Complain about the Key's coverage which did not mention the support given by schools - £300 this year, £2000 since the Bishop's letter.
