The policy on this was formulated by Bp Riddell. The seat of the old Walsingham shrine was utterly destroyed - nothing remains except for some ruins in Protestant hands. King's Lynn was where Leo XIII placed the shrine. What the Anglicans do is their affair. Some Catholics think differently and advertise their pilgrimages in the Tablet - until he contacted the Tablet. Continue to remind enquirers that the shrine is at King's Lynn, an old port through which the bulk of pilgrims from the Continent made their way to the famous old Shrine.

Caught napping with the second advertising campaign - was not conscious of authorising it but George had the impression that it was wanted. He has reduced costs by cutting out agency fee and other items for which he could have charged. Please pay; cannot pinpoint the results of press advertising. Puzzled by some charges. "But no more advertising!!"

Abortive work costs have to be paid.
Appeal should have a personalised approach by the Bishop - not done - but water under the bridge. The Cathedral is renewing its boilers, etc therefore less of a donation from that parish. Refers to his Ad Clerum in which he states that whilst a generous benefaction underwrites a third of the costs, any approach by Mr Ward should be welcomed.
The pope's visit - go sensitively, unlikely that he will visit Walsingham, so the success of the Appeal should not rest on this alone.

Enclosed [not present] a copy of the proposed magazine for Guild of St Felix. Had been working with Fr Filmer of the Guild of Ransom regarding their magazine who will have a standing advertisement for their "Million Pound Endowment Fund for Church Extension". Fr Davidson and he hope to see the Bishop at Felixstowe next Sunday.

Paid George Broughton from the Appeal receipts. Assures the Bishop that the advertising charges were on the same basis as the first campaign (May-June 1972). Good idea to get a quote in advance or at least set a cost limit beforehand.

Commenting that the Quantity Surveyors' fees are too high - £10,000 for already paid for the abortive work. Has contacted the QS.
Encouraging Bishop Clark to lead the way and stir up his Diocese and Deaneries. The expectation that the Pope is to visit Walsingham is not being discouraged.
